JOAN CATHERINE BREAKEY August 1, 1932 - April 15, 2014 With heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of Joan Breakey. Joan passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of April 15, 2014 with her granddaughter by her side. Joan started her journey to Heaven to be reunited once again with her husband Reggie, and son Dale. Left to celebrate her memory are daughter Jill (Allen) Drury, granddaughter Shauna (Randy) Lagimodiere, and the apple of her eye her great-grandson Jordan Lagimodiere; also her sister Doreen (Dodi) Gordon, cousin Judy Bracher, uncle Collin Campbell, sister-in-law Mary Taylor, brothers-in-law Del and Scott Breakey, as well as many long time friends. Joan was born on August 1, 1932 and was the second child to Jessie Belle and Russell Toole. They, along with Joan's "#1 sister" Dodi, lived on Osborne Street in Winnipeg. On August 23, 1952 Joan married the love of her life, Reggie. They had two children, Jill and Dale. In 1956 they moved to the Weston area where Joan would continue to call home for the next 57 years. For many years Joan managed Reilly's of Canada, a cigar distributor on Fort Street in downtown Winnipeg. In 1973 Joan and Reggie bought a cottage in Whytewold Beach where they enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Joan found the cottage so relaxing and enjoyed gardening and entertaining while there. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed cooking and baking which she was very good at. She also tried her hand at ceramics, knitting and sewing. Later, Joan took a Secretary position with Resource Development where she worked until her retirement. While still residing in the family home in Weston, Joan could often be found "kibitzing" with friends and acquaintances at the neighbourhood meeting place, Hambo's Restaurant. She also enjoyed going on "junkets" to the Shooting Star or Thief River Falls Casinos. Joan has been described by many as fiercely independent and strong and also self proclaimed to being feisty. Those who knew Joan knew that she could debate with the best of them and never miss a beat or back down. Joan loved her family and her family was never far from her thoughts or her from ours. She will remain forever in our hearts. Our heartfelt appreciation to all the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge for the patient, compassionate and dignified care they provided to Joan during her short stay there with special thanks to Hazel affectionately called "Hazel Dazel" by Joan. Those wishing to do so may make a donation in Joan's memory to the Scleroderma Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba. Memorial service 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Just wanted to offer my condolences on the passing of Joanie! Our Mom's (Greta Payette Stromberg) were great friends from their "teeny bopper days onward. They went on the Alaska cruise together, something my Mom would never have done on her own but with feisty Joanie she would do it! I am sure my Mom was at the Gates welcoming your Mom with a coffee and a warm hug! My sincere sympathy to you all, it is such a difficult time. - Posted by: Penny Schoonbaert (nee Payette) (Our Mom's were besties) on: Apr 17, 2014

  • Although we have never met, I feel like I know you. I really enjoyed your mom a lot and I will miss getting her notes. She was always sending Spencer coins and little notes she found of interest from either a newspaper or magazine. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you this holy week. Love, Barbara and Mark - Posted by: Barbara and Mark (cousins?) on: Apr 17, 2014
