JEAN BOYKO Jean Boyko died peacefully at Holy Family Home on May 14, 2014 at the age of 96. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Diane Basanta and Linda Boyko; grandchildren, Lorrisa Dilay (Brad Middleton), Chris Dilay (Elaine), and Jerrold Dilay (Amber). Jean will also be missed by her great-grandchildren, Savannah, Aiden, Jacob, Landon, Lucus and Lincoln, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband William after 58 years of marriage, her parents Katherine and John Gawinski, and her step-brothers, Metro and Michael Schawritka. Jean was born and raised in the farming area of Fisher Branch, Manitoba. She worked the farm with her parents while also attending school up to grade 8. Jean and William met and married in 1944. They briefly spent some time working on the family farm before they moved to Winnipeg. Jean was a dedicated homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and took pride in preparing traditional Ukrainian food not only for her family, but also for any guests who might drop by. When unexpected guests appeared at the door, Jean always seemed to be able to put together a wonderful meal and find a place for everyone to sleep. Jean enjoyed gardening, sewing, a friendly game of cards, sports and a lively discussion on current affairs. Above all, Jean's grandchildren were very special to her and she always enjoyed their visits and spending time with them. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 17 at St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St. Winnipeg, with Fr. I. Dziadyk, OSBM officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Dilay, Jerrold Dilay, Brad Middleton, Johnny Burak, Don Dilay and Keith Basanta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St. Winnipeg, R3L 0K6 or to Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave. Winnipeg, R2W 1T9 or a charity of one's choice. Jean's family would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff on floor 2A, Holy Family Home for their dedication, kindness and care. Her Smile Though her smile is gone forever, And her hand we cannot touch, We still have so many memories, Of the one we loved so much. Her memory is now our keepsake, With which we'll never part, God has her in His keeping, We have her in our hearts. Sadly missed, but never forgotten.
