ALICE KULIKOWSKI (MATHEWS) May 17, 1925 - June 28, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that the family of Alice Kulikowski announces the peaceful passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home with her family by her side. Left to cherish her memory are her children David, Diane (David) and Jim (Joanne), 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, her extended family and dear friends. Alice was predeceased by her parents and August, the father of her children. Alice was born on May 17, 1925, the only child of John and Annie Mathews. She grew up in Lettonia, in the area now known as Grausdin Point, named after her grandparents who homesteaded there. She attended Newcombe School, then completed her grade 10 by correspondence. Alice did work in the city for a while, at Hunter's Potato Chips and at a chocolate factory. Back home, she taught at Poplar Bay School before becoming a full time farm wife. She was a busy person, feeding any number of people with her rye bread and pig-in-blankets at a moment's notice, tending her gardens-especially the flowers, picking blueberries and endlessly knitting and crocheting treasures. We all looked forward to our mittens and slippers at Christmas. Alice was a quiet, caring person, who loved visits, especially her family. Every visit, every phone call was special to her. She had many good friends throughout her life. including at the Adult Day Program and her Lunch Bunch. She was a warm, friendly woman who never said a bad word about anyone. The gentle love she shared was certainly returned to her. Alice was a true lady. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her, dear friends and family. She loved living at Bonny Vista Lodge, and the Personal Care Home. The family would like to give a huge thank you to Alice's caregivers, who also gave us such wonderful care. Thank you! As per Alice's wishes, cremation has taken place. The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Lac du Bonnet, MB, with interment to follow in the Lac du Bonnet Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you so wish, a donation may be made to the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home, Box 1030, Lac du Bonnet, MB R0E 1A0. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My condolences to Diane, David, Jim and their families. “Aunt” Alice was a truly kind, special person. She was an important part of all my family’s summers at Poplar Bay. She’ll be missed by many people whose lives she touched. - Posted by: Carol Essenburg (Friend of the family) on: Jul 09, 2014

  • "Auntie Alice" was one of my parents' dearest friends, and important part of my childhood, as far back as I can remember. Our families spent many evenings together at her home or ours, and I was privileged to spend whole weeks on the farm with my best friend, her daughter Diane. With all the mischief we got into, all the messes we made in that hyper-productive kitchen (as Diane and I went through phases of baking spider cookies, "Joys of Jello", and other culinary exploration), the constant flow of friends and family (usually at mealtime), Alice took it all in stride, with a smiling shrug and a characteristic chuckle. She set an example of patience, good humour, generosity and warmth that extended to everyone around her. Diane and family, my heart is with you. - Posted by: Kate (Essenburg) Frego (Friend of the family) on: Jul 03, 2014

  • Condolences to the family. The time that I spent out at the farm, Alice treated me like family, with a warm heart and great food. She was a great cook! I remember Jim and I were making a homemade pizza and she was right there helping us along. Sure will miss her! - Posted by: Rockie Sawchuk (Friend) on: Jul 02, 2014
