HEDWIG (HEDY) CHAMBERS (nee SCHMIDT) Peacefully, with dignity and courage, Hedy passed away at Misericordia Interim Care on Friday, July 25, 2014. Hedy will be greatly missed by her family: her children Jannell Plouffe (Geoff), Darrell (Sarah), and Jarrett (Carolin), grandchildren Brett, Courtney, Jocelyn, Brady, Kyler, Madison, Tristan and Kennedy and great-grandchild Kolby. Hedy also leaves behind her brother Frank along with many nieces and nephews, especially "her Linda". Hedy was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Frank and Mary Schmidt and sister Teresa Gray. Hedy was born in the north end of Winnipeg in 1930 where she had a childhood full of the most amazing stories. Despite wanting to be a teacher, she was happily employed with Manitoba Telephone System until her marriage to Bill in 1959. Raising her three children was her sole priority for many years. Hedy did return to the workforce, retiring from the University of Manitoba upon arrival of her grandchildren. Hedy was an active volunteer for many community agencies: Fort Garry Community Club, Telephone Pioneers and the Winnipeg Ostomy Association. Hedy's gift was one of making friends, whether it was friends on Crescent Drive, Lee River, Armadale Hollows, Sterling house, Palliative Care Unit or Interim care: Hedy made friends. The most precious times involved family or summers at the cottage; these were truly special moments that will remain in all of our hearts. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave with Cathy Kinsman officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation in Hedy's memory may be made to Winnipeg Ostomy Association "Youth Camp" 204-825 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg Manitoba, R3A 1M5. The family wishes to offer sincere appreciation to all the health care facilities caring for Hedy over the last two years - there are too many special people to mention, but you all know who you are and how you held us all together through challenging times. Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • My condolences to her family. I first met Hedy when I joined the Tuesday MTS Volunteers making hearts for St. Boniface Hospital and she kept us on track stuffing hearts and making the bear ears for the Children's Hospital Teddy Bear Picnic. Hedy had such a positive outlook on life. What a treat it was to know her. I will miss her. - Posted by: Joyce Pachkowsky (Member of MTS Volunteers) on: Aug 27, 2014

  • Hedy always was smiling, telling us stories and I can hear her still laughing as we stuffed HUG A BEARS every Tuesday. I will miss you Hedy. - Posted by: Linda K. (Friend ) on: Aug 07, 2014

  • Hedy was a determined lady with a heart of gold and a contagious laugh. I enjoyed her stories and admired her devotion and love she gave to her family. - Posted by: Darlene Grantham (Friend) on: Aug 06, 2014

  • Hedy was the most amazing woman, whenever anyone was having a bad day, just listening to Hedy made you laugh. I will miss her - Posted by: Donna Wainikka (Friend) on: Aug 05, 2014

  • I met and worked with Hedy in Psychology Dept at U of M in early eighties. She was very outgoing and amiable ... We often got shuffled to the third floor office in the Roblin bldg. We enjoyed many laughs competing for certain transcripts to type up for the professors and sharing stories about family.. Prior to her grandparenting days. I ran into Hedy once while she was on a shopping mission ... It was clear she was still a devoted family woman and loved her children dearly. I am glad our paths crossed.
