HENRY NICKEL August 15, 1938 - July 31, 2014 We are deeply saddened to announce that, after a short and courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, July 31, 2014, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle Henry (Heinrich, Rick) passed away at the age of 75 years while surrounded by loved ones. Henry was born August 15, 1938 in Franzfeld, Ukraine to Heinrich and Maria Nickel. Henry's father died tragically in 1938, after which Maria moved her family to Germany. Henry was separated from his brother Abram in 1945. Henry, his sister Tina and their mother moved to Paraguay in 1948, immigrated to Canada in 1955, and eventually settled in Winnipeg. There he married in 1970 and became the proud father of three children; Kathryn, Kristin and Robert. Henry and his family were joyfully reunited with Abram and his family in 1972. Henry will lovingly be remembered by his two daughters Kathryn (Steve) and Kristin (Mike); his son Robert; his granddaughter Penelope; his brother Abram (Helen); his nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones. He was predeceased by his father Heinrich, mother Maria and sister Tina. His strong sense of loyalty, self-sacrifice, honesty and irreverent sense of humour will not fade in our memories. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Dad, we love you and we miss you. Always. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home; Highway #1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg, MB R2C 2Z3. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Rick was one of the few cousins my Mom (Hilda Rempel Gleason) had that I actually knew. After many years, we met again after Mom passed, and shared a couple of evenings at John and Dee Rempel's. He was very entertaining and could recount stories from his early life with surprising detail. Deepest sympathies to his family. - Posted by: Cindy Risi (Cousin) on: Aug 12, 2014

- Posted by: Hans Nickel (nephew) on: Aug 11, 2014

  • In life we meet many people and now and then we are lucky to me one who is a special and enduring person, one you can count on in good and bad such a person was Henry. We are deeply saddened to hear of his passing. We will always cherish his memory and the times we shared. His passing will leave a void in our lives that will never be erased. It has been our pleasure and honor to have know Henry. Rest in Peace my friend. - Posted by: Ron and June Putnam - Napanee, Ontario (close friends) on: Aug 09, 2014
