Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJANNA ALKEMA (nee HAVERKAMP) August 11, 1935- August 9, 2014 Peacefully on August 9, just 2 days short of her 79th birthday, our Mom, Oma, Grandmother and Greatgandmother went into the arms of her Lord. Janna was predeceased by her husband Dirk of 48 years of marriage in 2004. Janna emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in 1955 and was reunited with Dirk whom she married in Winnipeg in 1956. She is survived by her children Liz (Tom) van Leeuwen, Joyce (Jerry) Bosma, Harold (Natasha), Dave (Franca) and Jennifer Smith as well as her 20 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and son-in-law Clayton. We offer our most sincere thanks to the angels from homecare, as well as two of her dear friends Jannette and Mary who came faithfully every day to be with her these last two months. Viewing will be held Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway #1 East at Navin Road. In celebration of her life, a service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 15 at the Transcona Christian Reformed Church, 131 Victoria Ave. West. In lieu of flowers, donations may gratefully be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. God saw that you were hurting And a cure was not to be So he opened up his arms and said "Janna, come to me." Sad news. It's hard to be close in a country with our geographical span, but Dick and Janna were always special. Quick to open their home to a transient nephew, and always ready to aid in a car repair. See you in heaven, Tante Janna. We send our deepest heartfelt sympathies to the entire family. We were blessed to become neighbors with Dirk and Janna 13 years ago. They both were always a pleasure to see and speak with. I have to admit I am happy that Janna is with the love of her life Dirk again. She told me he was waiting for her. And now they have been reunited. May the family find peace in knowing that their Mother/Grandmother and Great-Grandma is resting in peace with her husband and she is no longer in pain nor is she sick. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of "mom" and send our deepest sympathy to the entire family. Your mom was a special woman and I will forever remember her at Jerry & Joyce's home where she would sit and chat while crocheting the edges of her baby blankets. We will miss her. I had the joy of beginning to get to know Janna over several months this year. It was delightful viewing her craft and her daughters Liz and Jenn's too! The last thing Janna said to me in conversation was, "What do you think of my family?" Their love for one another was in the air every time I had a shift there. I talked to Kaitlin today and heard this sad news. 'Gramma' was just the sweetest. As kids, Kaitlin and I were inseparable and I have very fond childhood memories of her showering Kaitlin and I with dainties + love every time we popped by to say hello. She treated me like a grandchild, too. I know how much she is loved by the VL family and know she will be missed dearly. Sending love to Kait, Laura, Joyce, Liz, Tom and the rest of the family.
