SLAVKO (LOUIS) SLEJKO December 15, 1925 - November 1, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Slavko at the age of 88 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 65 years, Lojska; daughters Margaret and Irene; son Andy (Vera); grandchildren Aaron (Alicia), Justin (Shelley), Meaghen (Mike), Erica and Evan, and great-grandchildren Andrea, Kayden and Maddyn. Slavko (Tata) was born on December 15, 1925 in Velike Zablje, Slovenia. Tata and Mama immigrated to Canada in May 1950 and on the ship met the Kvartic and Poklar families who they remained friends with their entire lives. They all spent that summer living in St. Eustache, MB working on a sugar beet farm and that fall moved to Winnipeg where they began their next journey. Tata had various jobs over the years and retired from the University of Winnipeg working in the maintenance department. Tata was a talented wood worker and took pride in everything he built. It wasn't finished until it was perfect. He was very proud of his Slovenian heritage and gave back to his community in many ways. He was the last surviving founding father of the Slovenian Club of Manitoba. Tata's love of singing showed as he was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Slovenian Church choir for 45 years, the Zvon singers who performed annually at Folklorama, and anytime that he and his friends got together the singing would start and it was the best of times. The family would like to thank Fr. Diosdado Parrenas, the many friends who came to visit Tata, as well as the nurses and staff at the Palliative Care Ward at St. Boniface Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. (viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) on November 7, 2014 at Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish, 95 MacDonald Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. For those who wish to do so, donations in Slavko's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Pocivaj v miru Tata. We love you. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My memories of our Zvon adventures with Slavko are never forgotten. Singing true Slovenian folk style with his beautiful and solid bass lines. And all the wonderful solos he sang at church. It is an honor and privilege to have been part of these musical adventures. Slavko...you are now joining all your singing friends to continue what you have left behind!!! Our sincere condolences to Lojska, Margaret, Irene and Andy. He will be missed but not forgotten! - Posted by: doris and dennis dekleva and family (choir and zvon member, friend) on: Nov 05, 2014

  • My mom and dad (Iva and Vinko) were friends of your father and mother and we spent time at your house on 5th St many times. - Posted by: Marie Peluso (nee Sinozic) (friends) on: Nov 04, 2014
