Doris was predeceased by her husband of 28 years Cecil in 1981 and was the last remaining member of her family, parents Eley and Kate, brothers Vernie, Melvin, Edwin and Wilfred and sisters Joyce and Emily. Beloved mother of Verne, Arlene (Joe Bodnar), Marilyn (Brian Korotash), Gerald (Laurie), Ron (Shauna), cherished grandmother to Marie and Dylan Bodnar, Darryl Korotash, Shannon (Donny) Granberg, Luke (Andrea) Slater, Liane (Craig) Lisoway, Erik (Jenna) Slater, Jesse Slater, Karly and Johnathon Richter, special great-grandmother to Kate, Keegan, Morgan, Halle, Kiptyn, Kovax and Zoey. Survived by brother-in-law Ken Slater and sister-in-law Myrna Hammerberg. Doris was born on March 28, 1926 to Eley and Kate Hammerberg. At age 17 she enrolled at the Winnipeg Normal School and spent almost a decade in her career as an educator in many one room schools throughout Manitoba. In later years she was employed by Canada Post. Mom met the love of her life, Cecil Slater, in the early 50s and they were married on October 9, 1953. Together they owned "C Slater Construction" in Teulon and started their family. Following our Dad's death she carried on with the family business. Mom always enjoyed her very large vegetable garden, curling, being a member of the Teulon Hospital Auxiliary, Teulon United Church, Royal Canadian Legion, Teulon New Horizons and her Monday afternoon knitting group. She spent many summers camping, fishing and travelling with family and friends. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Teulon-Rockwood Centennial Centre, Teulon, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Teulon Memory Garden or the Diabetes Association of Manitoba. MacKenzie Funeral Home mackhome@mts.net (204) 467 - 2525
