PETER SOPIWNYK 1925 - 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Peter Sopiwnyk passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Vita Personal Care Home, at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary; son Johnny at the family farm in Caliento, two daughters: Doreen (Mark), Winnipeg, and Mary Anne (Jerald), Edmonton: two grandchildren, Teresa (Chris) and Jared: and one great-grandson Emerson, Edmonton. Peter was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. Peter was born on October 23, 1925, in Caliento, MB. He was a generous, kind man who was proud to be a farmer and resided on his family's farm until early this year. He was able to remain farming well into his 80s. He was an accomplished musician who trained himself by ear to play the violin. Entertaining was a favourite hobby of his and he spent time playing for various occasions, as well as for the seniors in Vita. Peter spent six years serving his community as councillor for the R.M. of Stuartburn. He also enjoyed meeting up with his friends in town for a coffee. The most important things to Peter were his Ukrainian heritage, devout Catholic faith, and especially, his family and friends. He was a family man who had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. "Gido" you will be greatly missed! The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Vita Hospital and the Vita Personal Care Home. Prayers will be Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy 52 West, Steinbach, MB. Funeral service will be held Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, with viewing at the chapel prior to the service. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am related to Peter by being the grandson of his brother William and son of William's daughter Shirley. I remember visiting the farm when I was very young....I remember too he was a very nice man. Peter's family will be in my prayers. - Posted by: derek purinton (Sopiwnyk) (great nephew) on: Feb 08, 2015

  • Peter was my first cousin. His mother (Tykyna) was my mother's oldest sister and my oldest auntie. I lived in Calliento until the age of 15 when my family moved to Rainy River, Ontario. Peter and his wife, Mary and I were very close and we shared many, many good times. I remember Peter for being a very kind, loving, caring person with a "huge" heart and one became a better person just for having known him and having him in your life. My heart goes out to the family and I want them to know that my family and I all share in their sorrow and to let us know if there is anything we can do for them at this time of sorrow. I now live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and I read about his passing in the Carillon News. To the family -- May the Good Lord bless and keep you and rest assured that with the passage of time, this huge burden will get lighter. This is what Peter would wish for you. - Posted by: Elsie Bernier (Hrynyk) (First Cousin) on: Nov 11, 2014
