SUSAN MYLANKA BAKER After her heroic battle with cancer, Susan Mylanka Baker, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, peacefully passed away in her home on December 30, 2014 at the age of 59 years, with her loving family by her side. Besides her husband Dan Baker, she is survived by: two daughters, Dana (Kristian Andres), Winnipeg, Kendra (Brett) Stewart, Deloraine, and granddaughter, Keightley Stewart. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister Rita (Richard) Sukkau, nephew Braeden, in-laws Judy and Rocky Lodwick, Brenda and Wally Serger and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Mykola Tomycz. Susan was born January 7, 1955 and grew up in north Winnipeg. During her childhood years, she lived on Pacific Avenue with her parents, Helen and Mykola Tomycz and her grandparents. Her grandparents first immigrated from Ukraine to Canada following the war and relocated in Winnipeg. Years later, Susan's parents whom had initially immigrated to Australia, travelled overseas to be with their family and begin their lives in Winnipeg. Susan spent her elementary school years at nearby Pinkham School and she later proudly spent her junior and senior years at St. John's High School when her family moved to 284 Matheson Avenue. Susan loved sports and excelled at many, of which track was her favourite. She also had a deep love for art and animals. After high school at the age of 18, Sue began what would become her career at the Health Sciences Centre as a lab technician. She loved her job, the people she worked with and those she met, and remained there for 40 years until being diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2013. Susan met Dan in the summer of 1978 and their relationship flourished and on September 15, 1979 they married. After a number of years travelling, skiing and summers spent at the cabin at Winnipeg Beach, they were blessed with their first child, "DB" (Dana) and two years later with, "Squirt" (Kendra). Her life revolved so much around her girls, Danny, and especially her beautiful granddaughter "Zaba" (Keightley); and anyone who knew her would agree. Her family was always the light of her life. The family would like to thank the following: all of the wonderful staff at CancerCare Manitoba, St. Boniface Palliative Care and the Health Sciences Centre who helped her through her journey. A special thank-you to her Oncology and Palliative Care team, Dr. Banerji, Dr. Chowdhury, Kristie Morydz, Lori Walker, and Dr. Gingerich. Also, a special thank-you to her in-home care nurse, Liz and home care aides, Nina, Laurie and Gina-Lynn. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Kildonan United Church, 187 Kilbride Avenue, Winnipeg, with Reverend Mark Satterly officiating. Interment will be held privately at a later date. I met Susan approximately 40 years ago when I began my career at HSC. We never worked directly together but we always stopped to exchange stories and catch up on our families. I still always looked for her in the satellite lab when I needed blood drawn. I will definitely miss her cheerfulness and our encounters. She was a bubbly upbeat person always and I am deeply saddened by this news which I just received only today. - Posted by: Lorraine Palatnick (Lab Co-Worker at HSC) on: Feb 10, 2015

Just recently learned of Susan's fight with cancer and was saddened by the news. My condolences to her family.I will always remember her smile and a joke here and there. We shared stories about her "kids" and my "kids" who were about the same age and heavily involved in sports etc. She was always so proud of their accomplishments. My deepest condolences to everyone close to her, I worked with Susan for a year or so a few years back. She was always professional at her job and one of the best at what she did. If someone was difficult to get you asked Susan for help. We had few laughs together and knowing I'm Polish she called me a " baniak" in her loving way. She had smile on her face, especially when she talked about her girls, there are so many people that think of you fondly Susan, rest in peace. - Posted by: Ania Pfeifer (Co-worker) on: Jan 05, 2015

I'm so sad to hear of Susan's passing. Our birthdays were 2 days apart and both born the same year. We would always wish each other "Happy Birthday" and in our younger years celebrated together occasionally. Unfortunately, I will be out of town for her service, but I will be there in spirit. I'll miss you Susan! My sincerest condolences to her family. - Posted by: Debra Glenn (co-worker) on: Jan 04, 2015

Dana and Kendra - I am so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. I wasn't aware she was ill so this comes as quite a shock. Your mom was an amazing and passionate woman. I enjoyed many conversations with Susan over the years I was involved with soccer. My condolences to you both, your dad and to your families. - Posted by: Robbin Watson (Friend) on: Jan 03, 2015

Even though I was her supervisor, she was always an equal to me...giving her advice, her opinion, and her expertise with her years of experience. I'm sure the rest of the staff will agree that she was great to work with, always had an opinion (good or bad), was a true professional who thought of the patient first, and a great co-worker who passed on her knowledge and experience to those who worked with her. You fought a long, hard battle with the beast. Now it's time for you to rest...RIP Susan. Jeff Baquiran - Posted by: Jeff Baquiran (Co-worker) on: Jan 03, 2015

Susan was one of my favorite people to work with in the lab and I am so deeply saddened at the news of her passing. I would like to offer my condolences to her family especially her husband, daughters and granddaughter whom she spoke so highly of and was so so so proud of. Susan was like a mom to me at work because her daughter Dana and I are the same age and knowing I won't be able to visit her in the lab is just a terrible feeling. She was one of the ones so glad to see me leave the lab to pursue a different career cuz she felt I was capable of so much more and told me that everyday I saw her. Susan, I will miss you so dearly and I hope you rest well, and I hope your family finds peace in knowing that you are watching over them everyday and that heaven has gained a beautiful angel. Love you! - Posted by: Nikka (Friend) on: Jan 03, 2015
