PETER FROESE Peter Froese of Gimli was called from this life on January 8, 2015. His remaining family is: sister Anne Dyck, brother Jake (Tina), brother-in-law George Petkau (Mary) and brother-in-law Bert Goertzen (Helen) with wife Pauline. As well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a host of good friends whose love he cherished. He reached the age of 77 years. He was predeceased by: his parents Bernhard and Mary (Froese); sisters Mary (Petkau), Agathe (Petkau), Helen (Goertzen) and brothers-in-law Julius Petkau and George Dyck. Peter grew up in northern Saskatchewan as a quiet, reserved youngster. He took his high school in a small rural Manitoba school where his family had relocated. He lost his father at the beginning of his teen years. This necessitated his taking on some rather heavy responsibilities early in life. Resulting, he learned to be self reliant, a trait that he maintained throughout life and this characteristic served him well. All his life Peter was mathematically adept. This lead him to acquire an Actuarial Commerce degree and he followed up by working for several insurance companies. He did not find that a satisfying career. After attaining his Bachelor of Education he started his high school teaching career. He enjoyed that profession and had the satisfaction of seeing many of his students launch into a variety of careers successfully. He demonstrated a concern and dedication by tutoring many of his students and former students where this was needed. He gladly helped many students but made it clear that this was a no nonsense service. He spent many extracurricular hours coaching several sports for his school. During this time he was also active in the local teachers' union. He spent all but one year of his career teaching in the Gimli High School. Peter loved challenges. They could be in team sports like baseball, curling or bridge. Or they could be individual challenges like sudoku. Or they could be organizing events or devising tournament schedules. He would carefully evaluate the situation and devise his plan for success. On retiring he demonstrated dedication to his community by organizing a number of sports events for the school and for the community at the local and the provincial level. He enjoyed offering his expertise in the service of his community. He was well known for the shuttle service he provided with his car for the local community. For several years the charges that he requested did not cover his true cost. Peter was grateful that he was not subjected to severe pain during the 16 1/2 months of his battle with cancer. Many prayers were expressed on his behalf and they were deeply appreciated. Peter was very appreciative of the care that he received and loving empathy that he experienced by the way of the Gimli hospital staff, by the Cancer Care Unit and especially by the myriad of faithful friends. Responding to Peter's wishes a memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg and a community social gathering will be held at the New Horizons 55+ Centre, 17 North Colonization Rd., Gimli, on Saturday, January 17 at 1:30 pm. Should someone wish to donate to a charity in Peter's memory, Mennonite Central Committee (Manitoba), 134 Plaza Dr. Winnipeg R3T 5K9 is suggested.

Condolences & Memories (29 entries)

  • I just heard of Pete's passing. Such a phenomenal teacher. I swear he used to dance on his tippy toes as he solved a particularly difficult math problem. He made doing math an exciting adventure. As a coach, he made each of us feel special yet part of a team. Years later I would come to Islendingadagurinn hoping to find him in the Kinsmen booth. I will miss seeing him there. My sympathy to his family and friends. - Posted by: Margo Matwychuk (former student) on: Feb 12, 2015

  • Peter was a wonderful teacher and we had many laughs in the school gym where he spent many hour coaching and helping out with Volleyball and basket ball. Also had the pleasure of curling with him where he was very patient and understanding with us youngsters!! you will be greatly missed for all the work you have done in the community! - Posted by: Kathleen Tomalty Prystupa (studen) on: Jan 24, 2015

  • Condolences to the relatives of this intelligent and kind human being. Peter went out of his way to make me and my family feel welcomed when we moved to Gimli back in 1986. I enjoyed many rounds of golf with Peter over the years. He will be remembered and missed. - Posted by: Manfred Hildebrandt (Friend, fellow educator) on: Jan 22, 2015

  • I always had such a very high regard for Peter. I can't recall ever having a critical thought. But I must have a was a teenaged girl after all.. As a teacher he rarely lost his cool but was sometimes on the verge. You knew when your nonsense had gone far enough. He was intense but in a good way. He was my teacher and my friend. He gave me career advice, drinking advice, sports advice, boyfriend advice ( yes really) and I can even remember him opining on how I should wear my hair, he didn't approve of my fluffy hair period. He was all in as an advisor and was very kind and supportive. I will remember him fondly. - Posted by: Marlene Lock (Friend) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • Peter, Thank you for your many many hours you did curling draws for me at the Gimli Rec.Centre for our Pharmasave and guys and Dolls Bonspiels. I appreciated it very much. You were a great person to be around and we will miss you very much at the Rec. Centre in Gimli. I am sorry I wasn't able to have that bowl of Cream of Potato soup with you at Wednesday Afternoon Curling. Will think of you always when the Guys and Dolls bonspiel Comes in April of each year. Thanks again Peter. - Posted by: Phyllis Zaborosky (Friend) on: Jan 17, 2015

  • Thinking back over the years I cannot recall any teacher who was better at challenging every student no matter what level they were at. His tests and exams always had that "stumper" at the end that brought a wry smile on his face when he saw us agonizing over it - but it was always fair. His fairness was also so evident when he donned his stripes and whistle whether it was volleyball or basketball. Fair with no nonsense and trust me, we tested his patience on many an occasion! After high school one remembers his organizing skills especially with the dreaded bonspiel lineup. But knowing he was the one in charge immediately made one relax as he knew nothing but fairness and being unbiased. A true gift. A quiet, humble man who touched many lives - he will be forever fondly remembered and all others will be compared to him…….. - Posted by: James Prise (Former student) on: Jan 16, 2015

  • Such heartwarming comments shared about Mr. Froese brings back memories 26 years later! I've had many wonderful math teachers at GCHS - Mr. Sorokowski, Mr. Powroznik and Mr. Hildebrand. In my final year of high school, I was once again fortunate to add Mr. Froese to that list. When I think of Mr. Froese, Trigonometry comes to mind! Although I struggled to understand it, I was truly grateful for Mr. Froese's patience, time and effort to help me through such a challenging subject. He was a compassionate teacher who enjoyed teaching his students and his knowledge was greatly appreciated! Rest in peace, Mr. Froese. - Posted by: Michelle Douglas (Powroznik) (Former student) on: Jan 15, 2015

  • Mr Froese was an amazing man. And man could he spike a volleyball. No mercy! - Posted by: James Jesse Peterson (former student) on: Jan 15, 2015

  • My Condolences to the family on the passing of Peter. He was a kind hearted person who in his retirement years was always willing to help and offer his services to people in need. Though I had not known Peter for that many years it was a pleasure to meet him through Gimli Seniors Resource Council volunteer driving program where at times we shared transportation services for seniors. - Posted by: Richard Evasiuk (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • Mr. Froese was one of the best teachers in my memory -- he ruled his classroom, but was compassionate and had a great sense of humor (and did he ever need it, we put him through his paces). He is fondly remembered and will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Cassandra Brade (Poole) (former student) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • Thank you Mr. Froese for all that you taught me in Gimli. I loved many of the challenges you gave us in the process of teaching us math. You were tough but fair. I had a great deal of respect for you. Be at peace. - Posted by: Darlene Poier (Hall) (Former Student) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • When the community needed volunteers, the first person to come to mind was always Peter. Peter gave immeasurable hours of volunteer work to Gimli and area including curling events, MSOS games, winter games and as a driver to Winnipeg. He never wanted compensation but instead just wanted to do a good job and help people. His contribution as a teacher was tremendous. Our daughter had the good fortune to have Peter as a math teacher when she attended school in Gimli. He was also very helpful in the set up of the golf course especially in the coordination of the starters and marshalls. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Glen & Helen Mitchell (Friends) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • Mr. Froese was one of the best teachers out there. He was patient and kind and truly believed that girls were just as good at math as the boys. He never treated anyone any differently. He made me like math. It is truly sad that he is gone. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Carolyn Hall (former student) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • Peter was the first one to actually make me "see" math and the understanding of the 3 dimensional geometry of which the universe was made. Still trying to get the Theory of Everything. I'll Get there, Mr Froese! - Posted by: Roy Martin (Student) on: Jan 14, 2015

  • Peter was a special person, we are so proud to call him our friend. He will truly be missed. - Posted by: Ben and Gladys Graboweski (Friends) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • He was a wonderful teacher, so glad to have had the opportunity to know him. - Posted by: Kathleen Scribner (former student) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Mr. Froese made math enjoyable. His caring and supportive way, his approachable nature, made him a memorable teacher. He is a big reason why I had the courage and skills to major in math while in University and became a teacher as well! Rest in peace. - Posted by: Leslie Bardal (former student) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Peter Froese was my grade 10 Math teacher at GCHS in 1966, and although he only taught me for that one school year, I have always said that Mr. Froese was the only reason I graduated high school with math credits. He was such a dedicated and caring teacher and just an all around wonderful person. I am so glad I had the chance to thank him in person, years later. R.I.P Mr. Froese. You will be sadly missed but never forgotten. - Posted by: Roberta (Hogg) Bobby (former student) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Mr. Froese was the best teacher ever. He would go out of his way to help you and yet was stern enough that you could not slack off in class. Yes I tried on occasion. Working in a high school now I still thought of him often. Our paths crossed a few times after he retired and was always willing to stop and chat. So besides being the best teacher I was also able to call him a good friend. Rest in Peace Mr. Froese. - Posted by: Kent Bjornsson (Former Student) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Peter, my friend. Without your help I would not be enjoying the work I do at the golf course. You put meaning into my retirement, you will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Philip Laing (Friend) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • We both knew Peter from New Horizons, Kiwanis and golfing at the Gimli Links. We became very good friends and he will be greatly missed. I had called him several times from Sidney B.C. and never complained and enjoyed the call - Posted by: Marianne and Don Berry (Friends) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • I had the privilege of being a student of Mr Froese at GCHS. Sometimes it takes several years for us to realize how important a person was in our lives. Unfortunately, we often put off thanking for them for all that they did for us. Teachers, especially good teachers, are usually in that category. Mr Froese taught math. Math! Nobody likes math. But he taught with such passion that it was exciting. Solving a problem was like solving a mystery. Each lesson provided us with more tools to solve larger mysteries. And if we didn't understand, Mr Froese was there to help. But never to do it for us. Because he truly believed in his students. That they were capable of great things. I can't say that I can open a grade 12 math textbook now and remember all the answers. But what Mr Froese did was much more important than math. He taught us to learn. To be passionate about learning. To set goals for ourselves and work hard in achieving them. One step at a time. After I graduated, I would see Mr Froese from time to time. He would always remember me and be interested in what was going on in my life. I don't know if I ever took the time to thank him for believing in me. For providing me with the tools to believe in myself. Thank you, Mr Froese. - Posted by: Michelle Eramchuk (Winnemuller) (Student) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Al Palmer said …he got to know Peter when he became ill, & he helped him get the care he may need. “During these times I met many of his former students & I was pleasantly surprised to learn how he was respected by them for his extra help during their school years. As you know he was a very private person. He was very community minded & drove numerous people to Winnipeg for appointments & to the airport. This was done in all types of weather & at a cost to himself as he only charged a minor fee. He even missed bridge to do this service. He said it was his way of repaying his community; which he was very proud of." Ken Hardy said…..as well as being a teacher, Peter was a good athlete. “When we first met him he seemed to be more or less in charge of Bridge in Gimli. He was part of the crew that Halldora Hampton invited to Sat. night games at her place. We’ll miss him at our club." from Sharon Peichl & The New Horizons Contract & Duplicate Players .........."Peter has been very active in the Bridge Club and all of the activities at the New Horizons Centre, as well as in many volunteer positions in the whole community. He has been honored by several organizations for his contributions over many years. He was always in 'Teacher Mode' as well as 'Helper Mode'. Never waited to be served! We will miss him for a long time. We were lucky to have known him!" from Brian Wallace.......... "I visited Peter on Wednesday and he was comfortable but not long for this world. A colleague of mine for many years and I will miss his companionship." from Edith Olson......."He was such a positive and polite man - remember him working on organizing the tournaments. So sorry for his loss." from Marlene Dawson......"He put up a good fight." John & Elaine Williams wrote ........"On the golf course and at the bridge table Peter was a part of our lives for many years and we will miss him. Very sad indeed." - Posted by: Selkirk & Gimli Bridge Clubs (c/o Linda Homenick) (Friends) on: Jan 12, 2015
