GEORGINA MAY SOPKO Georgina was born on August 20, 1930 in Portage la Prairie, MB, to George and Jennie (nee Findlay) Gunderson. Her mother died when Georgina was only eight years old and she took on the responsibility of looking after her younger sister Coreen and brother Douglas. She passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, on January 6, 2015, surrounded by the love of her family and close friends. She was predeceased by three husbands: Ron Sheard, Steini Goodman, and Joe Sopko; her sons John and Michael, and her sister Coreen. She is survived by her brother Douglas, her daughter Georgina (Gina) of Winnipeg and her son Steve of Calgary. Her grandchildren are John's son Jonathan and wife Linda, and Gina's children Tammy and James. Tammy has given her four great-grandchildren: Robert, Steven, Samara and Shawn, and James gave her one great-grandchild, Tiffany Lee Sheard. She had three great-great-grandchildren: Emily, James, and Jacob. Georgina is also survived by her nieces Kathy and Mary, great-great-nephews Jordin, Drew, and great-niece Tammy. Georgina was a tiny, hardworking, bundle of energy remembered for her love of knitting, crocheting, baking, and gardening. Her lot in Richer, MB, where she lived for nearly 50 years, produced vegetables, fruit, and flowers. She turned out jars of pickles, preserves, and jams. She loved feeding the birds, especially the hummingbirds, who were attracted by her flowers. She faithfully volunteered for many years in her community. She was a member of the Friends for Prayer, the Paradise Village Aquasize group, a weekly dominoes group, and the Richer Fellowship Church. She belonged to TOPS, faithfully kept to her weight goal for ten years and was promoted to KOPS. Her funeral service was held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Richer Fellowship Church, Richer, MB. There will be a ceremony in the summertime to inter her ashes. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My husband and I were sorry to hear of the passing of Georgina; Our Deepest Sympathy to her family. My parents live right next door to her, and we live next door to my parents (we all moved to Richer in 1996). I will miss seeing her from our kitchen window as I did my dishes. She was always outside working, it seemed... we don't know where she got the energy to do so... but we always admired that aspect of her life. She was small physically but huge in Spirit... I will also miss her laugh... it was 'memorable'. She loved her birds and was kind to her 4-legged friends too! May her family find comfort in all of the good memories spent together. - Posted by: Karen E. Kilgour-Klann & Kelvin J. Klann (Neighbours) on: Jan 13, 2015

  • Steve, Gina and Family. We have lived next door to Georgina for eighteen years and couldn't have asked for a better neighbor and friend. We enjoyed many coffee and dinner visits and talked for hours about anything and everything. Our neighborhood will never be the same without her....we will miss her dearly. Please know that we are thinking of you as you grieve for her and be comforted that she will be with you in spirit and in your heart forever. - Posted by: Marvis and Don Kilgour (Next Door Neighbors) on: Jan 13, 2015
