Date of Passing: Jan 12, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJ. RUSSELL MCLAUGHLIN January 28, 1976 - January 12, 2015 Russ was a generous man who would always give a helping hand never expecting anything in return as many of his friends can attest to. His laughter and sensitivity will be missed by his mother Susan, father Doug, brother Andrew, and all of his family and friends whose lives he touched. Russ was a very loving, caring, and compassionate man making him an easy person to love and be around. During his life Russ was a great sports enthusiast whether as a spectator or participant. Many a Saturday and Sunday was spent with friends watching hockey or football. He enjoyed playing hockey for most of his childhood and well into his 20s. In his youth he especially enjoyed sailing with his brother Andrew and dog Babe at Gull Lake. Much time was also spent when he was young with his mom, dad, and brother swimming, fishing and canoeing at the Lake of the Woods. Russ never missed the opportunity to travel with friends and family. Some of his favourite destinations were Hong Kong, Hawaii, Mexico and Cuba and, of course, numerous places across Canada and the United States. He joined the Society for Creative Anachronism at the age of 16 and as his assumed character "Thorolf" of the Barony of Castel Rouge became very proficient at costume design and constructing armor. Russ' membership in this organization led to many lasting friendships. Russ is described by his friends as being genuine, level headed, creative, warm-hearted, protective and funny. The world will be a lesser place without him. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Russell's life at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street on January 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. 204-586-8044

To the family: Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Russ was special, and was like a second son to me as I watched him grow up alongside my son Michael as they became best friends. Russ had many wonderful qualities. To me he was always respectful and polite and all who knew him appreciated his sense of humor, his generosity, his loyalty and honesty. He was a gentle soul. He was loved by all who knew him. His smiling face and wonderful hugs are memories that I will always cherish. He will be missed dearly and remembered with much affection. - Posted by: Lin & Dennis Overall (Russell's best friend's mother) on: Jan 24, 2015

Russ, or Thorolf as we knew him, and I met through the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism when he was a strapping lad. He impressed us all with his humor, his charm and his immediate love of history and especially, his love of making armour. He never lost that love, even when life took him in different directions. After I left Air Canada, he offered me a job working in his shop, Hopewell Machine Works. And despite making far less there than at AC, I loved the work. Russ was never afraid to get his hands dirty, and he taught me a lot about estimating jobs, a skill I still use today as a part time Blacksmith. Even after I stopped being his employee, he offered me a small corner of his shop to use as an armoury. We shared the space and the tools and had many enjoyable nights building armour, laughing, talking and generally enjoying life. Whenever he'd get really frustrated with what was going on in the office, he'd come back to the armoury and work for a little while to "blow off steam". His friendship, his wit, his charm and that massive grin will be missed by anyone who knew him. Some people are family by birth, some you choose along the way, I'm proud to say that Russ was one I chose to call Brother. Sleep well my friend, you deserve it. - Posted by: Pedro Bedard SCA; Pedro de Carrion del los Condes Ramirez (Damn good friend.) on: Jan 15, 2015

Russ/Thorolf was one of my favourite people in the Barony of Castel Rouge. I remember when he first started in the Barony, at the age of 15 (I think!). He was so funny and the whole group were pretty wild and really entertaining for the rest of us. He grew into such a wonderful man. My fondest memories of him were when he served for a year as my Baronial Champion. He set the standards for all succeeding Champions--a bar they never reached. He was an honourable and skilled fighter who was unfailingly chivalrous and helpful. As he grew older, I was impressed by how his interest in the Barony and things "medieval" changed, but didn't really wane, even when he had less time to devote to them. His smiling face and wonderful hugs, his unalloyed joy whenever I saw him again, are memories I will always cherish. I will miss him terribly. My heartfelt condolences go to you and all my sympathies for your loss. - Posted by: Linda Lassman (SCA: Gabriela dei Clementini d'Orvieto, former Baroness Castel Rouge) (Friend) on: Jan 14, 2015
