I worked with Joe for the past 10 years. We spent many hours travelling together around the province and he mentored me a lot about both telecommunications and life. He had a great attitude about work life. He was very dedicated to his job but there was always time for wind surfing and skiing. "If it's a blow'n, I'm a go'n" was one of his favorite expressions. He sure had a way of being conscientious but not too serious... As with many that knew him, I am going to miss him very much! - Posted by: Ed Buell (Co-Worker and Friend) on: Jan 26, 2015

I met Joe when I first joined MTS back in 1975. He was very easy going and always had a sense of humour about everything. We had been partners for the last 25 years, retrofitting and replacing aging microwave radio systems in Northern Manitoba. I planned and he implemented. I made mistakes and he corrected them. Joe was very resourceful and had good personality. For all those years, we had many challenges in our work and we probably couldn't overcome them without Joe's wisdom and advices. During my last years with MTS, I had had issues with management politics. Joe helped me to deal with them with his words of encouragement. I moved to Toronto after my retirement, but we kept in touch with each other. Joe was planning to come to Toronto to have a beer with me last year but it never happened. My sincere condolence. - Posted by: Chris Woo (Ex-coworker & Friend) on: Jan 26, 2015

Joe and I both took Electrical Engineering at U of M and subsequently met in the early 1970's at MTS, where we spent our working careers. He and Karin had just bought 5 acres in West St. Paul, and influenced Judy and I to do the same. We became 'country' neighbours, which we still are to this day. We both built our own houses, planted trees, gardened, raised families, car pooled, skied, had our own skating rinks and played hockey. During the car pool commute, no issue was too complex for us to analyze and solve. Joe's favourite topics were technical, and research them thoroughly he did. Joe excelled in repairing his cars. He might explain that modern engine starters are generally permanent-magnet, reduction-gear designs, however older vehicles are equipped with field coil starters. And only a battery and starter in good condition will maintain the high cranking voltages needed to maintain a full range of PCM (phase-change material) functions. When Joe got the windsurfing bug, he expounded on the "water start" by positioning the floating sail into the wind, getting underneath it (where there is no air), pushing the luff out of the water to allow the wind to catch the sail, and then having the sail pull you onto the board. This demanded full power and trim attention, exactly when you are at the highest point of exhaustion. More recently, we met regularly at the River Crest Hotel for a beer. Particle physics was a frequent topic. I would learn that elementary particles include fermions, which are "matter and antimatter particles", as well as the Higgs boson, which is a "force particle" that mediates interactions among fermions. In the past year I frequently, with a Tim's double double and honey cruller in hand, had enjoyable visits with Joe & Karin at their house. I will miss him. - Posted by: Fred Goertzen (Friend) on: Jan 25, 2015

I worked with Joe at MTS for many years. He was a wonderful raconteur and enjoyed having discussions about SAP and quizzing me about processes. He talked about his daughters and wife and his projects often. I remember wen he planted trees in is front yard (it seemed like thousands). He was so proud that we took a "field trip" to check them out. It was quite funny when 1 day in Montreal airport a young lady's cell phone died and she needed to call her Dad. I loaned her my phone and she told me her father worked for MTS. OMG what a surprise that it was Joe. We often talked about retirement and Joe would always say not yet as I have to pay for university. He was so proud of his daughters. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great guy, may he rest in peace. - Posted by: Laura Peluso (co-worker) on: Jan 24, 2015

JSo long good friend. Joe was a fascinating guy. As teenagers, Joe was one of the Flin Flon weightlifters which turned him into the buff, handsome rascal that he was. He joined our gang at the Lake Athapap water ski shows with some unique stunts, including the headstand on a saucer! Hence, the nickname, "Headstand Joe"! Joe joined me at UofM in the Engineering school and also joined the same fraternity (SPD). We lost track of each other for many years except for a quick visit one day at my brother Tom's cabin at Lake Athapap with Clark Starrie and myself circa 2000. That day, Joe explained to us how an automatic transmission works, how to take them apart, and how to fix them. He had repaired several. My Mom would love it when Joe visited the cabin when we were teenagers, as he would readily enlist to polish the top of her cast iron wood stove and he had the muscles to do the best job of anyone. Our sincere condolences to the family he loved so much. Ron - Posted by: Ron Gilmore (Friend, classmate and fraternity brother) on: Jan 24, 2015

I worked with Joe from his first day at MTS in the Protection Group of Outside Plant Engineering. Joe was always a good hearted and friendly coworker. He was always conscientious in his approach to his work as he moved through the departments, and could be counted on for a thorough analysis of his work, and willingness to work with his colleagues. I was saddened to hear about his bout with cancer, as he was always athletic, healthy and active in many pursuits – particularly the building of his house and pool and the sports he enjoyed. He was very proud of his daughters and often spoke of their interests and accomplishments as they grew up. Joe will be missed for his positive nature and his love for life and family. My sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Leonard Lewkowich (Co-worker and colleague) on: Jan 24, 2015

Joe was a wonderful friend whom I knew from Flin Flon. He particicpated in the annual water-ski shows at Baker's Narrows demonstrating his amazing balance. He will be fondly remembered for his smile and enthusiasm by all the other skiers and participants. - Posted by: Tom Gilmore (friend) on: Jan 24, 2015
