SIEGFRIED WILHELM GRAFE It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Siegfried Wilhelm Grafe, aged 78 years, who went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at St. Boniface Hospital surrounded by family. Sieg was born in Berlin on May 7, 1936, the oldest of two children of Maria and Wilhelm Grafe. Eager to serve the Lord Sieg left Germany when 23 years old to study at Winnipeg Bible College (Providence). He was soon joined by Ursula (nee Gehrke) who became his wife and partner in ministry of 52 years. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (University of Manitoba, 1968) and teachers training he left with his young family to serve God for thirty years in Africa with Africa Inland Mission. He left a legacy of faithful service teaching pastors, building libraries/bridges, preaching and sharing his love of music and Jesus. Life in the Congo fueled many stories about adventures on motorbike and big game hunting trips. Retiring in 2001 to Winnipeg he continued to serve God through visitation, church work, ministry to International students and continued involvement with an orphanage he started in Kenya. Music was the passion which fed his spirit and blessed the lives of those around him. Successfully completing grade 10 pipe organ, he shared his love of music through teaching and performing. Sieg was ordained in 1983 and completed a Masters of Theology in 1988. While enjoying the study of theology, Sieg also delighted in sharing the good news of Gods' grace through Jesus Christ which he experienced in his own life. Left to mourn his passing are, his wife Ursula (nee Gehrke), children Peter (Heather) Grafe, Daniella (Tom) Penner, Judy-Ann (Roy) Friesen, Mark (Sandi) Grafe, 14 grandchildren, his brother Gerhard (Gisela) Grafe and three nieces. Sieg was predeceased by his mother (Maria Kurt). Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 8 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 205 Roseberry St, Winnipeg. Memorial service will be on Monday, February 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, 500 Lagimodiere Blvd, Winnipeg with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Rays of Hope Ministries, Box 778, Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0, www.Bethelraysofhope.com in Sieg's memory. Cropo Funeral Chapel 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Sorry this is so belated, but I just heard about Mr. Grafe's passing. He was a great principal to me during what was my first year of teaching many, many years ago. We very much enjoyed having your family visit us at Dominion City, Manitoba while we lived there, and, I believe you were on furlough from Africa. May God in His great love help all of you adjust to life without your husband/ father/grandfather. With sincere condolences, Charlotte Quasso - Posted by: Charlotte (Wiebe) and Eugene Quasso (taught together at Hochstadt, Manitoba) on: Apr 20, 2015

  • We learned with sorrow about Sieg's sudden passing from this life. Yet we know he is now in the presence of the One he loved more than life itself, and most likely is playing in a heavenly orchestra right now! It was our privilege to know and work with the Grafe family at Rethy. We will always hold you all in our hearts. Our deepest condolences to Ursula, Peter, Daniella, Judy and Mark and their families. - Posted by: Fred and Virginia Speckman (Friends and co-workers ar Rethy Academy) on: Feb 13, 2015

  • So many memories of Sieg and the family while stationed at Rethy! The awesome games of Rook and hanging out! His smile and laughter and especially his playing the piano for church and school functions! God Bless and are thinking of you all during this time! - Posted by: Jan Cook Kreis (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • We join the others in extending our sympathies and prayers for Ursula and the entire Grafe family. Sieg set an example of what it means to love the Church that Jesus bought with his own blood. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us building His kingdom in DRCongo. Steve & Debbie - Posted by: Steve & Debbie Wolcott (Friends & Congo co-worker) on: Feb 11, 2015

  • Praying for each of you as you mourn & celebrate Sieg's life!! I have many memories of rousing Rook games at the Grafe house at Rethy! - not that I was participating in those games at that time! :-) God's blessings to each of you! - Posted by: Sharon (Cook) Porter () on: Feb 10, 2015

  • Our sympathies and prayers are with Ursula and the entire family of Sieg. He was a faithful co-worker with us in Congo where he worked at Watsa. We worked together with the CECA church in administration (church council meetings), Bible teaching, evangelism and other responsibilities. His other activities which strengthened the church spiritually included pastoring the French congregation at Gambela, church library at Mongoro, and visits to encourage pastors in their ministries. Sieg was a personal friend with whom we used to enjoy more than an occasional hunting trip to replenish our own larders, but also those of many others especially the school boarding facilities as well as pastors and local friends. Many times Sieg encouraged us with his musical expertise, including lessons on the piano for our children. We will miss his fellowship and contributions to God's work but God will not forget His reward for the faithfulness of His steward (Heb.6:10) and we know we shall meet again in the Father's Kingdom. Our hope is steadfast and sure: we will meet again and be together in the the beautiful home Sig has already gone ahead to. We are praying for you. • My prayers are with you. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." We know Sieg is in a far better place but he will be sorely missed by many. - Posted by: John Hosie (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2015

  • Thank you, Siegfried, for the time, I had the pleasure to know you. Thank you for every single day or evening, when you and your wife were my host to fight my loneliness as a new immigrant in Winnipeg, coming from Germany. You prayed for sure a lot, when I was again on one of my continent wide trips as a long haul trucker. We sang together and it really felt good. Your passing away touches me real deep, I didn't expect it that fast. I feel some guilt, that Maria and I couldn't see you more often due to my long haul trucker job. The Lord will give Ursula the strength to accept his decision. You will ever be in our mind as our honorable wedding witnesses together with Ulla. We will miss your special smile. • His Master replied 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant.' I was shocked to learn that Siegfried had passed away so suddenly. My condolences go out to Ursula and family. Siegfried and Ursula were dear friends of my parents, Hans & Gertrud Rahn. For as far back as I can remember, they would faithfully visit them, whether they were at home or ill and/or in the hospital. They always took the time to share scripture as well as beloved hymns with them. It was always an inspiration for my dad who is gone and especially for my mother during her last days before she passed away two years ago. Thank you both for your devotion and true Christian love. - Posted by: Angela (friend of the family) on: Feb 07, 2015

  • Precious Memories!. Our Prayers to all the family. The GOD of all comfort be upon you. 2 COR 1:3. Love Esther & Family (Sorensen) - Posted by: Esther (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2015

  • So sorry to hear about Sig but we know that he is now with his Lord. He will be missed by us. We had many good times together. I especially think of the time that we took our Sunday School class to the zoo and Sig prepared a barbeque for us even though it was winter and we had to eat our hot dogs with mittens on. You visited us for my birthday one year and my Mum was there and she remarked after that you were just regular people even though you were missionaries and so easy to get to know. Our love and sympathies go out to all the family Marge and Dave Buzza - Posted by: Marge and Dave Buzza (Friend) on: Feb 07, 2015

  • Sorry to hear of Sieg's passing. My many memories and prayers are with Ursula and family. I remember your dear little family when you lived in our Chapel before heading for Africa and packing your barrels in our garage. He is with the one he served and loved.
