HELEN ILONA PUTTAERT (nee DRABIK) November 28, 1924 - February 15, 2015 It is with sadness, with family by her side, that we announce the passing of Helen I. Puttaert (Drabik) on February 15, 2015 at the age of 90 years. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 66 years, Alex; sons Gordon (Linda), Douglas (Cynthia); daughters Maureen (Greg), Donna (Glen); nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Mary and Julie; and brother Carl (Sheila). She was predeceased by her parents Anthony and Katherine Drabik; brothers Phillip, Joseph, August and Nicholas; and sisters Sophie and Janet. Helen was born and raised in Winnipeg Beach. In 1945 she met her husband Alex at the Winnipeg Beach Dance Hall while he was on leave from the Navy. Helen and Alex were married September 10, 1948 and made their home in Winnipeg. Family was very important to Helen. She loved being a mother and caring for her children. She was a wonderful cook and delighted in hosting family dinners and gatherings. Mom was a longtime member of the St. Vital YMCA. She enjoyed her lifetime love of the water with her involvement in the synchronized swimming group and teaching swimming lessons. It was here her children began their involvement in sports for which she was a loyal supporter. Mom enjoyed travel and spent many winters in her motor home down south. She especially loved Mazatlan and Acapulco. Since 1967, she spent every summer at the family cottage at Falcon Lake. Landscaping her yard and blueberry picking were among her favourite pastimes. The family benefited with many a blueberry pie. She will be dearly missed. Thank you to the Seven Oaks Hospital Emergency Department and the 5th floor staff, especially the nurses Minda and Connie, for the care they gave Mom. Thanks also to nurses Helen and Veronica, whose compassionate care was greatly appreciated during her short stay at Holy Family Nursing Home. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday February 19, 2015, with viewing half an hour prior, at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway #1 East at Navin Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com
