Born: Jun 24, 1915
Date of Passing: Feb 21, 2015
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY LUKIE (nee GRYBA) Peacefully, on February 21, 2015 at Holy Family Home, Mary Lukie was called to heaven in her 100th year. She will be dearly missed by her children, Edward (Emily) of Sudbury, Ann (Roman) of Winnipeg, Irene (Stan) of Weyburn and Walter (Isabel) of Winnipeg. She also leaves to mourn her sister Ann of Deland, Florida in addition to her 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Peter of 48 years, son Paul, grandson Dennis, daughter Emily, and brothers Mike, Joe, Peter Walter and John Gryba. Mary was born on June 24, 1915 in Gilbert Plains to Franko Gryba and Varvara Manchur as the second oldest of seven children. She completed her formal education at Tartakiw School. In 1934 Mary married Peter Lukie at Venlaw Church in the Gilbert Plains area and together they raised six children. Mom and Dad farmed in the Grandview area and worked hard to support their family. They were quite devoted to the church in Grandview which they helped build in 1937. In 1950 Mary became one of the founding members of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League (UCWLC) of St. Elias Church in Grandview. Our parents' home was always home to the local parish priests and many family and friends. Christmas and Easter were celebrated as family get togethers when she enjoyed visits from her children and grandchildren. Both our parents were very happy living in the community with the same lifelong friends. Mom and Dad retired to Dauphin where they continued their involvement in local parish and seniors' activities. After Peter's death, Mary lived in Dauphin until 1997. She loved the outdoors and kept herself occupied working in her vegetable and flower gardens. At age 83 she moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her family and lived mostly at the Holy Family Towers. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 26 at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg, officiated by her grandson, Fr. Raymond Lukie, C.Ss.R. and fellow Redemptorist Fathers. Panachyda will be sung 1:30 p.m., Friday, February 27 at Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel, Dauphin, Manitoba with interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Donations may be made in Mary's memory to the Lubov Foundation or St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Special gratitude is extended to the devoted staff of St. John's Unit, Holy Family Home for their compassionate care and kindness, and to her Towers friends for their visits. Ever Remembered, Ever Loved. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193
