Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I first met Johanna in the Fall of 1985 during one of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony's 'Pig-Out' gatherings, following a Masterpiece Series Saturday night concert. I was a violinist in the Symphony at the time, as well as a graduate student in the Department of Physics at the University of Waterloo. I was immediately attracted by Johanna's beautiful smile and vivacious personality. It was obvious she loved music - she was so happy to talk about anything to do with music and the Symphony - she positively radiated charm and joy! We became friends, went on long walks and talked about anything and everything - she was so genuine, happy and unspoiled! To me she was like a breath of fresh air during a very difficult time, as my mother had died several months previously. As I got to know her better, I became ever more impressed with her love of life, her sincerity and her profound spirituality - there was such a deep core of sweetness and innocence about her that I will never forget. We tried our hand at the beautiful aria from Bach's St. Matthew Passion 'Erbarme Dich mein Gott' - she sang the vocal line and I played the solo violin part; she had such a lovely, clear voice, it was such a joy to make music with her! We also met at McGinnis' Landing (she worked there as a waitress) where, after a long day of cranking through endless experiments for my MSc project, I could finally get some food and enjoy Johanna's vivacious company! Time flew by...I came to care for Johanna very deeply, indeed I fell in love with her - it was impossible not to love her, she was such a warm, beautiful woman! However, it was not to be: I was already engaged, and so we resolved to remain friends...we gradually lost touch with each other, as it was too difficult to keep a distance, our feelings for each other were too deep...I never forgot Johanna... It is with enormous sadness that I just learned of her passing. She was so young, so beautiful so full of life - what a terrible tragedy! I am so very, very sorry. My sincerest condolences to everyone in her family, I grieve for your enormous loss. Dear, sweet, beautiful Johanna, you were like a ray of sunshine and loved by everyone whose life you touched...may your soul now sing with the angels, and fly forever in Eternal Light… - Posted by: Andrei Z.
