MACKENZIE FLAHERTY March 2, 1998 - May 28, 2015 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mackenzie (Mac) on May 28, 2015 at the young age of 17. Mac is survived by his biological family including his grandparents Jim and Laurie, his mother Angela, siblings Nona and Riley, his father Scott (Christine), brothers Dawson and Hunter, aunt and uncles Neil and Jessica and their families as well as his grandmother Victoria. Mac will also be devastatingly missed by his foster family of 11 years - his foster mom Polly, sisters Hanna and Natalie (Kelly), brother Troy, and his nephews Luke and Tanner as well as countless friends, neighbours, and family friends - all of whom loved Mac very much. From a very young age, it was evident that Mac was a kind soul with a sensitive heart. He melted hearts from the moment you met him. He always wanted to make others around him smile and feel happy and was extremely good at doing just that. Mac was a very good student in school with great grades. He always seemed to enjoy school. He enjoyed learning, he enjoyed being with his friends and in his middle years he found a love of playing music. He played drums in the Church band at Wayside Gospel Chapel and he also composed his own music at home. Mac, we are all feeling so terribly crushed and lost without you around. We love you and thank you for being a part of our lives. You've left a powerful legacy on all of us. Thank you to everyone who has helped during this incredibly difficult time. Special family friends who have been supporting us every step of the way. You know who you are and your love and compassion will never be forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held at Wayside Gospel Church in Grand Marais, Manitoba on Friday, June 5 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a child advocacy charity of your choice. A MacKenzie Flaherty Canoe Trip for Youth fund is being established and details will follow on how you can donate to that. Also, as a legacy and in the deepest respect for Mac we ask that you do something kind for someone who needs it. Pay it forward with kindness in honour of Mac. Talk to the kid in class who looks upset, stick up for someone who needs a friend, lend a helping hand. This was something Mac was so good at and we want to keep that goodness in this world.

  • I met Mac only once when he was a little boy and always remembered his beautiful blonde hair and adorable smile. My condolences go out to each and every person touched by the young man's life and particularly to Polly, Troy and Natalie. I know that each one of you made Mac feel loved, appreciated & welcomed with every ounce of your generous kindness. May his memory be a constant reminder of the love and support each one of you undoubtedly gave to his very young life. God bless each one of your beautiful hearts and all else whose heart aches. Mac is an Angel in heaven looking down, protecting you now as you did him for so many years. All my love Xo - Posted by: Erynn Lavallee (Foster Family Friend) on: Jun 06, 2015

  • Mac was a happy go lucky kid, he mean't well and was so funny. He knew how to make everyone laugh like he could put a smile on anyone's face. I can remember his laugh like I heard it yesterday I always imagine him smiling because that's all he did. I wish you were still here Mac because you were someone who really changed my life. But like you said "shit happens man". I hope your still making jokes up there Mac I really do. • Mac was a blessing to have in everyone's life, he touched many people in his short time on this earth. He inspired children in his school to be a gentle and caring person. As I write this I know words will never replace the hole in your families hearts that Macs death has put there. This tragic of a loss only reminds me of when I lost my brother at the age of 16. I have empathy for his siblings that have to go through this time ff sorrow. I pray that knowing he's in the arms of the Lord that you find strength to carry on in this awful time. No one will ever replace Macs dashing smile and beautiful personality, and as time goes on and big events happen when he is not there you smile because you know he is always with you in spirit & looking down on all of us, still inspiring us to be a positive, loving and productive person as he was and always will be. God bless. - Posted by: Tegan kupchik (friend) on: Jun 05, 2015

  • I've known Mac for as long as I can remember. We lived a couple houses down from one another when her used to live on Canberra, he would come over many evenings and play loads of video games while we made my grandma make us millions of snacks. I will never forget the day he told me (this was in grade 3 probably) that one of is goals was to be able to read an entire encyclopedia in one night. Thinking of it then i thought he was crazy, but now I admire how smart and determined he was! He was one of my very best friends. I will never forget Mac and how great of a person he was. He will forever be loved and missed in my heart. Rest easy Mac. - Posted by: Cassidy DeKlerck ((friend)) on: Jun 05, 2015

  • I remember attending daycare for continuous years with Mac back in our younger days. I'll never forget the day when we were sitting in room 8 waiting for our parents to pick us up and Mac told me I was the love of his life and he gave me my first ever kiss on the cheek. Even though we were young and couldn't have been older than 7 years, this memory is marked on my heart forever. Mac, it's been just over a year since I've last seen you and I miss you more than ever, I'm so sorry you had to go so soon. You will be missed. You're forever in my heart. • To all Mac's Family, I only met Mac a few times at my sisters lake cottage. He is the dearest and best friend of my nephew, Luc. In the brief, but so memorable moments of time that I got to talk with Mac, I heard nothing but optimism, hopes, dreams, and witnessed his kindness, generosity and humor in person and I am so happy for that. He was a boy that was to be treasured and revered. I feel so very lucky to have met and talked with Mac and I was always so happy to know that Luc had such a dear friend in his life. He has truly left a mark in this world. He will always be remembered in the most wonderful ways, of that I am sure. I send you all my most profound sympathy.....you and Mac will be in my thoughts and prayers today and always. • Mac was a great friend to me. Anytime I was sad he'd always know how to make me smile. We used to hang out a lot in grade 10. We'd hang out with a big group and play uno. Man was that great times. I'm going to miss seeing him around, seeing his smile and hearing his laugh and jokes. He'll always be in my heart. - Posted by: Kahrissa Bercier (Friend) on: Jun 03, 2015

  • My son Keenan went to school with Mac when he lived on Canberra. They were best of friends and back then we knew Mac was special. He had such a smile that was contagious and back then we knew his heart was golden. The boys made silly videos and had a great time no matter what they were doing. Mac made lots of good friends in the neighbourhood and school and all the parents thought he was a great kid. We remember Mac loved his "mom" Polly and his sister Hanna, he always talked about them with his big smile. Although Keenan hasnt seen Mac in awhile, he definitely is in our hearts forever. - Posted by: Cindy(keenan) Smith (friend) on: Jun 03, 2015
