C. JOHN DEMPSTER Peacefully on May 1, 2015 at St. Boniface Hospital, John passed away at the age of 89 years. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 66 years Barbara; children Jill, Bruce, Jaye (Tony) and Cameron; grandchildren Michael, Kirsten, Kyla, Adam, Taylor, Ian and Robert as well as numerous extended family and friends. John was born in Winnipeg, to parents Cecil and Margaret Dempster. He grew up St. Vital, attending both Norberry School and Glenlawn Collegiate. He would go on to further his education at United College and U of M receiving his B.Sc. (Hons) degree. He later went to McGill University where he received his doctorate. He spent his working career, more than 35 years, at the Canadian Grain Research Laboratory in Winnipeg. John and Barb were active square and round dancers for over 50 years. They were also active in the St. Vital Historical Society and Museum. As the resident historian he enjoyed sharing his knowledge of St. Vital with young people and was named as an honorary member this past year. He enjoyed monthly luncheons with retirees from work as well as breakfasts with "The Old Boys' Club" (former classmates). He was a big fan of the Big Band Era, spending countless hours listening to it first on record, then tape, then CD and eventually on iPad. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or Siloam Mission. Memorial service 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015 at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road.
