Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMANFRED (FRED) LEGIEHN October 25, 1938 - June 16, 2015 A gentle and quiet man has left this world and on to Glory. It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at the Pinawa Hospital at the age of 76 in the arms of his family. . Manfred will be eternally missed and cherished by Olga his loving wife of almost 49 years, his loving children Dr. Gerald (Carmel) Legiehn, White Rock, BC, and Kimberly (Allan) Hutchison, Winnipeg. He had an immense love for his grandchildren Sierra and Tianna Hutchison; and Lauren, Owen and Olivia Legiehn who will cherish countless wonderful memories of him. Manfred was a devoted husband and father. He was proud of his family and their accomplishments and enormously enjoyed his children's piano concerts, ballet recitals, sports, and later his grandchildren's similar activities. Manfred leaves sisters and brothers, Ericka, Frederick (Bev), Helmut (Jean), Erna, and Hedy (Edward); brothers-in-law Laurence (Suzanne) Tkach and Harold Mortenson, nieces and nephews. Manfred was predeceased by parents Henry and Helen, sister Emma in infancy, sister Hilda, sister-in-law Sonya, brothers-in-law Lawrence and Jim, and mother and father-in-law Stella and Fred Tkach. Manfred grew up in East Kildonan's Morse Place. He often talked about his childhood days and the wide open spaces he enjoyed. Manfred studied violin, viola and some piano. He later played viola with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Manfred studied at United College (U of W) for two years, got a summer job at National Testing Laboratories, a job he enjoyed, and was employed by them for a few years. He then returned to study at Red River College. Upon graduation in 1965, he made Pinawa his home where he was employed by AECL's Whiteshell Laboratories, Reactor Operations Dept., and later transferred to Research and Development. He retired in 1998. Manfred had a great appreciation and love for classical music. He spent many hours coaching his children, particularly in preparation for piano competitions and exams. Manfred enjoyed sports equally well. He had a passion for the Pinawa Goldeyes baseball league where he played back-catcher and pitcher. He was a past member of the Pinawa Golf Club winning a trophy one year for best net score. He also coached little league hockey for many years and several seasons of little league baseball. Running, hockey and roller-blading all kept Manfred in great physical shape. His favourite was skiing in Whistler. He was a member of the Manitoba Runners Assoc. He enjoyed his early morning drives with Olga to various races, winning many medals and trophies; the most notable was winning the years best time in his age category. Some of his favourite races were the Manitoba Half-Marathon, the Winnipeg Beach to Gimli race, and the arduous Grand Beach race. A memorable achievement was the 10-day relay run from Winnipeg to Thompson, named "Seniors on the Run." Service will be celebrated on Monday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 37 Burrows Rd., Pinawa, MB with Fr. Jim Gray officiating. Interment will follow at the Pinawa Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB or to a charity of one's choice. May you always have music in your soul Manfred. Bless you, love you my Dear. Searching the memories of my childhood, I can recall brief moments of Manfred's character that stood out. Gentle and quiet indeed, with a strong family protectiveness, and his passion for sport revealed at the hockey rink. Sending our condolences to the Legiehn family - Posted by: Glenn & Susanne Bailey (Family friend) on: Jun 21, 2015
