DOUGLAS IRWIN SMALL It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we say goodbye to our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin, friend and most importantly husband. Douglas Irwin Small passed away peacefully in the early morning on Sunday, June 21, 2015, with his wife and family by his side. Doug would have celebrated his 86th birthday on June 24. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence (Johnston), children: David (Cheryl), Gary (Donna), Bonnie (Sandy), Doug Jr., Cheryl, Rick (Doreen) and Randy (Louise). He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister Betty (Don) and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Mae Fleming and father Dr. John Small as well as numerous siblings and in-laws. Doug worked on the boats and then joined CN rail in 1951 in Thunder Bay. He then went on to pursue a management career in 1970 relocating his family to Saskatoon in 1971 with a brief stop in Melville prior to his last transfer to Winnipeg where he took up residence in Richer from 1975 to present. He completed his career in senior management with CN rail and after a brief stint he was called by T.S.B. to take a position as their accident investigator for a period of 10 years. Doug and Flo had a very happy marriage and were always active in the community with their dancing and aqua sizing and enjoyed their involvement with the church and the Young at Hearts Club. Doug was an awesome golfer and enjoyed partaking in the annual lilac Smally invitational on the August long weekend. He loved his hockey, baseball and numerous other sports. He had a passion for aviation later in life and owned and piloted his own plane. During his later years, he loved to hop on his motorcycle with Flo and take short trips with their good friends Bob and Darquise. Doug was blessed with a healthy life except towards the end. The family would like to say a big thank you to the Ste. Anne Hospital staff for their tireless efforts during his care. Thank you to Sister Irene and Pastor Simon for their presence and support at the end of his life. Your prayers helped him and the family get through this trying time. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Doug's life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Richer Fellowship Church with a luncheon to follow at the Richer Young at Heart Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice is appreciated. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030
