TOM IRWIN Tom Irwin was born June 3, 1925 in Brandon, Manitoba and passed away in Winnipeg on June 20, 2015. Tom graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba in 1951 and practised as an architect for several years, however his greatest interest was in history and he returned to university where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Arts from the University of Saskatchewan, and went on to achieve a Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Manitoba. Tom then taught in the Winnipeg and St. James School divisions until his retirement in 1981. Tom married Anne Watt in 1956 and she predeceased him in 1994. Tom leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Kathleen (partner Ed) of Rankin Inlet and Elizabeth (partner Erick) of the RM of St. Andrews; grandchildren, Hillary, Manny (Nikki), Guthrie (Sherry), Dana (Randy), Morning Star and Mishshakoon; great-grandchildren, Riley, Isabelle, Jonah and Dante. Tom told his daughters on a regular basis that he had lived a wonderful life. Thank you to family and friends who supported him and to the staff at Luther Home where he lived for the last few years. He left many happy memories for his children and grandchildren. He was an avid photographer and amassed a collection of slides until failing health made it too difficult for him to continue. He enjoyed sharing his thoughts and knowledge of historic events, watching the BBC news, and reading a good biography. In accordance with Tom's wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage you to make a donation to the Winnipeg Boys and Girls Club. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I knew Tom for over 55 years and was very fond of him. I think of Tom and his good friend Ken Todd often, their long walks, Saturday crosswords, coffee at Tim Hortons and Suppers at Salisbury House. He always had his camera at the ready and gave us so many pictures over the years. He was so proud of his family. I know he will be missed. - Posted by: Heather Lutz (Friend) on: Sep 14, 2015

  • Tom loved life. He treasured his many friends and was always enthusiastic about the people he met in his daily pursuits. Tom read widely and was thrilled to discover there the sparkle of human personality and the richness of human achievement. Family mattered enormously to Tom and they were a favoured topic in his conversation. Oh, yes, as his family and friends know, he was always ready for another game of Upwards! - Posted by: Helen and Bruce Petersen (Long-time friends. ) on: Jul 02, 2015
