I met Neil at Midtown Motors. I used to wash Perth trucks there on Saturdays. He worked there as a mechanic under his dad, Vince, who was the boss there at the garage. Neil liked eating corned beef sandwiches. He had a very nice personality. He introduced me to stock car racing. We rented a shop together. His race car was number 27. I was number 28. Sometimes he would go racing into the USA on weekends. He and I rented a mechanical repair shop on Archibald St. called Speedway Automotive. His wife, Kate, would sometimes come to the shop and sleep there while we would be working on our race cars. The 2 of them and myself would get into his 1967 Camaro and go to, I think it was called MOON restaurant at Lockport, Man. on Friday nights for a hot dog. I think that restaurant was a sentimental place for them. Neil played hockey for the Wpg. Police hockey team at the Wpg. arena. I used to go to the arena with his wife, Kate and watch him play. Neil said, well, if someone calls me for a tow truck, I will drop my skates and go help them. That is how he started M'Carthurs Towing Company. He had a very successful tow truck company. One day when I needed a tow truck, I phoned his company and the tow truck came and helped me. When I asked the driver how much money for your service? He said, No CHARGE. Neil doesn't charge his friends. Your bill is paid courtesy of Neil. The thing I could not figure out is how did this stranger to me, tow truck driver know I was a friend of Neil M'Carthurs. Later, Neil sold his company and moved to Wpg. Beach area. He used to go to the auctions in Winnipeg and buy smashed up cars and, I guess he would resell them. He was very ambitious and Friendly. One time I talked to one of his employees and said that Neil had a brother called Wayne. The guy said back to me that Neil did not have a brother named Wayne. I knew better, because I had met his brother Wayne. When Neil and I had our race car shop, Neil picked up a B model custom race car called "LUCIFER". He had a lot of fun with that race car. He would fire it up at the shop and drive it out onto Archibald st. Of course it was illegal, no licence plates on the car, and all that burned rubber left on the pavement. Thank you Neil for giving me the free tow truck service. Friend. - Posted by: Barry Saunders (Friend) on: May 05, 2019
