VERA GORLICK It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dear mother, Vera Elaine Gorlick, age 89 on Friday, August 14, 2015. Left to mourn are children Barry (Maria), Brenda (Victor), Brian (Charlotta), grandchildren Samantha, Ryan, Alexandra, Gregory, Jordie, Taj, Molly and Joel, sisters Pearl, Carol, Emily, Shirley, brother Billy and sister-in-law Lena. Vera was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Gorlick in 1999. Mom was born in Shell Valley, Manitoba in 1926, to Eli and Pauline Paulenko - a first generation Canadian of Romanian heritage in a family of fourteen. She learned the value of family at an early age and thrived in social gatherings of all types. Mom graduated from Normal School becoming the first teaching graduate from her community, a profession she loved. She was married to Lawrence Gorlick, her teenage sweetheart, in 1949, celebrating fifty years of marriage before his death. After the birth of her first son in 1955 her priorities became her children, her extended family, her church community and her home. Mom always kept a welcoming home and we were blessed to have many extended family members living with us as they completed their education in the "Big City" - Winnipeg. She developed a great love of the arts and culture and was a lifelong volunteer for the RWB, WSO, John Howard Society and many others. She served as the President of the Women's Committees of these organizations as well as the St. George Ladies Auxiliary. As a founding member of St. George, her dedication and commitment to the church is what sustained her. Her gifts to all were her time and meticulous care, never turning down an opportunity to serve others. Mom's home-making skills were highly acclaimed. She was a seamstress, a world class baker (in our eyes) and kept an immaculate household. She provided all the love and support she could muster for each of us; often, she was relegated to double-duty as mother/father since our dad was "workin' on the railroad all the livelong day". With the birth of her grandchildren, Mom became the go-to babysitter, playmate and caregiver to her eight "babies". Nothing gave her greater pleasure than having them all together for family gatherings. Mom's love of music and the arts rubbed off on all of us. There was always music in the household played on piano, guitar, drums and accordion by her three "B's". As a former school teacher, she valued education above everything else and assisted each of us in our endeavours to reach our goals through learning. The biggest lesson of all was mom's unconditional love for everyone which manifested itself through her volunteerism and day to day living. She was a friend to family members and strangers alike and truly had the "gift of the gab". No doubt she is sharing one of her many stories, real or imagined, with the multitudes of angels gone before her. Heartfelt thanks to her Caregivers: CompCare (Veronica, Emily and Criselda), Staff of Misericordia Place and HSC nursing and medical team. Prayers, Sunday, August 23, 7:00 p.m. at St. George Orthodox Church - 121 Harvard Ave. E. Funeral Service, Monday, August 24, 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George Orthodox Church or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Friends Funeral Service 204-339-5555

I was the new kid in the fall of 1953 at East St. Paul School, my parents having moved to a farm on Lot 92, Hoddinott Road. Vera Gorlick was my Grade 3 teacher, who accepted me unconditionally without prejudice (this was only 8 years after the end of WWII, and my grandparents had immigrated from Japan). I remember a kind, effective teacher who complimented me on my ability in math (I eventually became a teacher of Chemistry, Physics, General Science and Math at Hillcrest High School in Ottawa for 32 years until retirement in 2004). Once she asked me to draw a map of the world on the blackboard. There had been no map in the schoolroom, but I had discovered a really old Atlas in the attic of the farmhouse, and was amazed that humans had mapped the entire world. She was so impressed that she left my map on the front board for a couple days. I'm sure she encouraged her own children and grandchildren the same way. A really great, influential human being. - Posted by: ROGER TAGUCHI (Former student in Grade 3 at East St. Paul School) on: Feb 03, 2023

My condolences to the Gorlick Family. I have fond memories of my summer job in the '80s working at The Things Shop. Mrs. Gorlick volunteered Friday afternoons as I recall. I looked forward to our conversations between customers. She was such a delightful, kind lady, and so proud of her children! She also gave me great encouragement and advice. - Posted by: Sandra (Morgan) Colp () on: Aug 22, 2015

Condolences to the Gorlick family on the loss of your mother and grandmother. My memories of Mrs. Gorlick, always friendly and smiling, date back to our high school days but even earlier than that when Brenda and I competed in the Winnipeg Music Competition Festival in the late 60's. Our mothers were the backbone of support in everything we did. Fond memories! - Posted by: Arlene Rempel () on: Aug 20, 2015
