MIRA FOLDI (nee HINIC) On August 19, 2015, Mira passed away peacefully at the Lions Personal Care Home, at age of 94 years. Mira is survived by her daughter Andrea (Perry) Gilfix; grandchildren Michael Gilfix (Vancouver) and Lindsay (Shawn) Delaney, as well as great-grandson Kai (Halifax). She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Alexander. Mira was born in Vinkovci, Croatia on December 14, 1920. Like many other people born in Europe in the 1920s she led a life that was full of challenges. In 1940, her parents were taken by the German occupying army and she was forced to take refuge in Hungary, where she was married shortly after. In 1944, Hungary was invaded as well and she was forced to convert to save her life. The Post war years were very difficult under Russian rule. In 1956, Mira and Alex saw their opportunity to escape during the Hungarian Revolution. For the next year, Mira, Alex and their baby Andrea were refugees in England. By the end of 1957, they were admitted into Canada, and Mira was able to start her new life, at the age of 37, in Winnipeg. Mira worked as a Medical Secretary at McGregor Medical Centre until her retirement at age 60, at which time she helped care for her grandchildren. She was fluent in six languages and was an interpreter at the Manitoba Law Courts. Her greatest love was taking care of her grandchildren and family. Her hobbies included needlework, sewing, baking delicious Hungarian pastries and traveling with Alex to Hungary in summer and Hawaii in winter. The family would like to thank the compassionate care provided by the staff on the Second floor of Lions Personal Care Home. If you wish, donations may be made to Crohns and Colitis Foundation. In accordance with her wishes, Mira's cremated remains have been interred at St. Vital Cemetery where she is reunited with her loving husband Alex. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • A very well written obituary to tell of the rich and full life Mira led, and of her great strength in surviving a turbulent period in our human history. I enjoyed my visits with her and especially her stories about being an interpreter at different times in her life. She was especially proud of her daughter Andrea, son in law Perry, and her grandchildren and great grand son. May you enjoy the freedom of being in peace, where ever you are Mira. - Posted by: Hazrah Khan (Friend) on: Aug 26, 2015
