GERTRUDE PROST Gertrude was born in May of 1929 in Jansen, SK, the eldest of seven children born to Rudolf and Lydia Renz. She was schooled in the Steinbach area, and then moved to Winnipeg to work. She married our father, Stanley Prost, in June of 1948. They raised their family in Birtle and then Blumenort. She was an excellent baker, liked to garden, knit and crochet, and played cards, harmonica, and accordion. During her last few years in Blumenort, she worked at Granny's Poultry, bought herself a car, and took a few classes for self-improvement. When Stan retired in 1982, they moved to Steinbach. In 1983, he passed away, but she continued to live on Hanover Street, both in the house and then the apartment, for over 30 years. When vascular dementia became evident, she reluctantly let her family move her into assisted living in Steinbach, where she lived for 18 months, followed by the last three months in personal care in Winnipeg. Her incredibly fast decline quashed the plans we had for outings in the city. Although Mum experienced increasing confusion, she maintained her optimism and sense of humor, almost to the end. Bev, her main support for the past two years, was privileged to be with Mum when she peacefully succumbed on the evening of August 16, 2015 at the Southeast Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Mum was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children, Marlene (Vic) Naworynski, Ken (Liz), Gerry (Darlene), Gordon, Bev (Gerald) Kornelsen, Norm (Heather), and Frances (Fraser) Kulba; seven grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. She is also survived by all six siblings: Elsie Gerelus, Helmuth (Ann), George (Norma), Ann Lewis, Henry (Betty), Bernice (Lawrence) Pachniosky, and many nieces and nephews. Mum was blessed with wonderful health professionals and caregivers. We thank, in Steinbach, Dr. Karen Toews, Jenn Kulpa, Sieg and the staff at Bridgepark Manor, and Brenda Barkman and Mum's home care workers. In Winnipeg, Rita and the kind and patient staff at Southeast Personal Care Home, especially the caregivers in House One, and Dr. Shawn Thomas. We also must thank our aunt Bernice, and sister-in-law Heather. Cremation has taken place and an interment of ashes will be held at a later date in Steinbach.
