MARIA PETKAU (nee NICKEL) Maria Petkau passed away peacefully September 4, 2015 at Bethania Personal Care Home. She was born on May 14, 1919 to parents Johann and Maria Nickel. She married Jacob Petkau in 1955, who predeceased her on January 30, 1996. Maria is survived by children, Kathy (John) Schellenberg, Hans Petkau, Rudy (Nelly) Petkau; grandchildren Laurel Schellenberg, Michael Schellenberg, Richard Petkau (Kristle), Daniel Petkau, Eric Petkau (Kelsey) and Alex Petkau; great-granddaughter, Molly; five nieces and one nephew in BC. Maria was a longtime member of Sargent Mennonite Church. She immigrated to Canada in 1948 from Russia, then Germany after the Second World War. She settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba where she lived the rest of her life. She lived a long and healthy life. Maria developed dementia in the last ten years of her life. She was lovingly cared for at Bethania Personal Care Home for the last two and one half years, where she died peacefully at the age of 96. We will miss her courageous spirit and loving heart. She was our dear mother and we loved her. May she rejoice eternally in Heaven in the presence of her Saviour. Funeral service will be Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield Street, Winnipeg, with interment to follow in Brookside Cemetery. Viewing on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, and also at the church prior to the service.
