JOHN MARTENS After fighting Cancer courageously for three and a half years, John Martens passed away on December 1, 2015 at the age of 79 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Erna, daughters Rhonda (Ron Epp) and Shelley (Helmut Janzen), along with grandchildren Brent, Alyssa (Mike), Riley (Lenore) and great-grandchildren Jadyn, Aubrey, Elyana and Simon. He also leaves to mourn one brother Gerhard of Germany, as well as many nieces and nephews. The youngest of eight children, he was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Margaretha, and six siblings and their spouses. John was born on March 17, 1936 in Neuendorf, Ukraine and immigrated to Canada in 1949 with most of his family where they settled in Niverville, Manitoba. After marrying Erna Krahn in 1959, they moved to Winnipeg where he worked at Christie Biscuits and 333 Broadway as 4th Class Engineer until his retirement in 2001. Funeral service will be held at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch Street on Saturday, December 5 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow in Mennonite Memorial Gardens. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to Dr. Czaykowski and his team at CancerCare and to all the staff of 3 East at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Union Gospel Mission, Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of your choice.
