Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARTIN HIEBERT December 20, 1920 - December 23, 2015 After 95 years and three days, with his family at his side, God called His faithful servant Martin Hiebert home. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret (nee Banman); his children, Esther Klassen (Larry), Abe, David (Renita), Peter (Sharon) and Tim (Kendiss); sister Mary Adams; grandchildren, Julia Peters (Warren), Garett Klassen (Samantha), Paul (Jennifer), Terry, Steven, Courtney, Kiersten and Jadyn; and great-grandchildren, Mathew, Maya, Carter, Elizabeth, Olivia and Penelope. He was predeceased by nine brothers, one sister and daughter-in-law Shirley. Martin was born on the family farm near Winkler, the middle child of 10 brothers and two sisters. The Hiebert family struggled with poverty, so Dad went to work on other farms at the age of 11. Despite this, he was able to finish a grade eight education at the Zion School, and later in life, completed grade 10. He dedicated his life to Christ at the age of 13 and was baptized at the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church at 14. Dad's decision to follow God shaped his entire life. It was at Bible school that Dad met Margaret Banman who was to become the love of his life. They were married on August 31, 1947 at the Grossweide Mennonite Brethren Church and started their life together on a farm near Kronsgard. Esther, Abe and David were born while living on the farm. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1955 and Dad started his career in carpentry. Dad initially worked with his older brother Joe, then on his own, building many houses all over Winnipeg. Later, Peter and Tim were born to complete the family. Dad was generous with his knowledge, teaching his own sons and many others the trade of carpentry and the importance of integrity and a job well done. Times were tough and in the 1970s, Dad took a job at Redekopp Lumber which provided much needed financial stability. Dad was later transferred to Willmar Windows where he worked for many years as lead carpenter before retiring in 1987. Dad was an active member of the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church since their move to Winnipeg in 1955. He volunteered as Sunday School teacher, building maintenance and house-father serving the church over many decades. In fact, Dad had a hand in either making or repairing nearly every wood surface at Elmwood. Following retirement, Mom and Dad spent their summers volunteering at Simonhouse Bible Camp located in Northern Manitoba for 11 years. Over the years, Dad built several new cabins, repaired and maintained many camp buildings. Their time at Simonhouse Camp brought them great joy as they formed special relationships with many northern friends, and used their talents to bring the love of Christ to countless children. Dad also worked as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and WASO. He was always using his hands and put them to good use in the service of others. For example, one of Dad's hobbies was making fancy picture frames for others. He was very modest and never sought credit for himself but glory for God instead. The smell of sawdust brings back memories of Dad to all of his children. In later years, however, heart disease prevented him from doing the work that he loved. Dad loved his family very much and did his best to support and encourage his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff of Concordia Hospital, in the emergency department and the intensive care unit for the kind and dignified care they provided throughout Dad's short illness. Special thanks to Drs. Knezic, Shaikh, and Strumpher and all of the Concordia Hospital ICU staff. Viewing will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg on Monday, January 4, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Interment to take place on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Please meet inside the gates. Memorial service will follow at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Highway at 1:30 p.m. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)
