Eugene Peter Richlark, OSBM died peacefully at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, December 26, 2015. Born Peter Richlark, on July 5, 1935 in Kelliher, SK, he entered the Basilian Novitiate in Mundare, AB on March 18, 1950 and made his Solemn Profession of Vows in the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat on September 8, 1957. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1960 by Bishop Ivan Buchko in Rome, Italy. Fr. Eugene dedicated much of his priestly life to the education of young Catholics enrolled in the Order's High School, St. Basil-The-Great College School, in Weston, ON, first as a teacher of English Literature, and then as the School's Principal. Throughout his 30+ year career in education, Fr. Eugene always had high expectations for both the students at the school, as well as the teachers who taught there. Through his dedication and attention to administrative details, Fr. Eugene helped build the reputation of St. Basil-The-Great College School into an institution that was the envy of many Catholic Schools in the Toronto area. After retiring from the School, Fr. Eugene served as Assistant Pastor at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Vancouver, BC and as Assistant Pastor at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg. He also served the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat as Provincial Secretary/Treasurer (1996-2004, 2012-present) and as the elected Provincial Superior of the Sacred Heart Province (2004-2012), in Winnipeg, MB. Fr. Eugene is survived by his brothers, John (Arlene) of Peterboro, ON and Wally Richlark of Saskatoon, SK, and by his sisters Evelyn Lukan of Halifax, NS, and Mildred (Ronald) Heinrich of Burlington, ON. He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Katherine (nee Nazar) Richlark, sisters Alice Syrota and Mary Shedden. Monastic Parastas will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, on Wednesday, December 30 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, December 31 at 10:00 a.m., also at St. Nicholas Church, with burial to follow in the Basilian Order's section of Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main Street, West St. Paul, MB. Donations in memory of Fr. Eugene Richlark, OSBM may be made to the Education of Basilian Priests Fund, c/o Basilian Fathers, 737 Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2X 1J9. God grant Fr. Eugene eternal rest and entrance into the eternal happiness where all the saints repose! VICHNAYA PAM'YAT! KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

Fr. Eugene was my principal at St. Basil College from 1979 to 1983 when I graduated. He was a wonderful principal, and took a great interest in the school band, of which I was a member. He also encouraged my work as morning PA announcer for the school. I am heartened the find out that he was living in Manitoba when I taught at Brandon University, although I wish I had known then. His death happened the week I ended my tenure there. I know Father Eugene is enjoying some great music in heaven. The world misses him. I miss him. - Posted by: Dr. Carla DiGiorgio (Student) on: Mar 21, 2019

It was with shock I heard that Fr. Eugene had died. We were buddies from our childhood days, throughout our elementary school years, and the little time he spent at Bedford. I followed him to Mundare in the fall of 1950 and stayed for seven years. We remained friends over the years and visited whenever we could. He was a special friend. I will miss him, but after visiting him in July of this year, and seeing how pain was his constant companion, I am happy that he is safe in the place "where there is no suffering." Vichnaya Pamyat dear friend. I will visit your graveside when I can. - Posted by: Bill Michaluk (Friend) on: Jan 01, 2016

My attendance at Assumption College pleased him. I cherished our relationship and banter. Despite drifting apart, I always felt close to him. He will be missed. - Posted by: Rob Piper (Family) on: Jan 01, 2016

Fr. Eugene, my first cousin, albeit one with whom I have been in contact only sporadically, in latter years, will be missed, if by no other way than knowing he was always there for me (us). This, in spite of the fact that we know he is with us, still, in some mysterious way, in the “Communion of Saints.” What seems like ages ago, he - my Dad’s sister’s son - visited often. Fr. Eugene’s Dad - Pete Richlark- and my Dad were great friends. After Fr. Eugene’s Mom - my Auntie Katie - died, uncle Pete visited us as always. Many visits were labour intensive: putting in a septic field - manually, making sidewalks in the same manner, etc. On many of these occasions, Fr. Eugene, busy as he was, was not far behind. Fr. Eugene visited us much in early years: probably in Ituna, SK, before he was a priest - when I was too young to remember and, later on, in Glenboro, Fisher Branch, and Gimli, MB. I remember visits to him in Mundare, AB and Weston, ON, among (I think) other places of his formation and of his priestly vocation. Shortly after my marriage, to Marilyn in Dec. of 1973, Fr. Eugene had been to Rome (again). He visited us with a scroll bearing an “Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of divine graces and favours,” from His Holiness, Pope Paul VI. It has been framed and on a wall of our various homes since then. He was a man - a priest - with a great sense of humour. No doubt, he had to be, as principal of so big a school in Weston, ON, as Provincial Superior, et al. He, on occasion, referred to himself as having ‘one foot in the grave. ‘ - Not many knew how, or even THAT, he had lost a foot in earlier years. As I remember Fr. Eugene from days gone by, nevertheless clearly and vividly, I recall one who cherished and prayed for family and friends, one who had purpose, a positive attitude, and a sense of humour, one who was very busy and who had much responsibility, and, without a doubt, one who did all for the greater glory of God! I will miss Father Eugene greatly. Although my heart has darkened after his passing, I am comforted in the certainty that a new light has been bestowed upon heaven from such a wonderful and kind man. - Posted by: Alex Goudeketting (Friend) on: Dec 29, 2015

I first met Fr. Eugene when I started teaching at St. Basil College. We worked together until his retirement and he remained my friend until his passing. I will always remember him as an astute administrator, a demanding teacher, and a kind and caring friend. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Terry Bonasheski (Friend and Colleague) on: Dec 29, 2015

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Fr. Eugene. We have fond memories of him, especially from summer days at Dr. Michael and Ann Kapusta's family cottage in Keswick, Ontario or if he popped in to my store. I know Fr. Eugene made an impression on our children as he was always kind to them. It was always a pleasure catching up with him. Rest in peace. You will live on in our hearts and memories. Friends and I prayed for Father Eugene all week. When the news of his falling-asleep reached us, we commended his soul to the Lord at a Benedictine Shrine. May the angels accompany him before the Throne of the Almighty and may our Blessed Mother lovingly intercede for him with her Divine Son. I first met Father Eugene in 1996 and we became friends immediately. To those who knew him well he was a man of delightful wit, high standards, and a great sense of humour. He would have made an incredible impression on those he taught and those who worked with him, as he did me. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Mike Lisowski (friend) on: Dec 29, 2015
