Born: Jun 19, 1939
Date of Passing: Jan 24, 2016
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM JOHN PRYSTANSKI William John Prystanski, dearly beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016, after a long and courageous fight with heart disease. Dad was born in the Winnipeg area on June 19, 1939. He grew up in Old Kildonan and attended the community's one room school. After getting married in 1965, Dad and his family moved into Winnipeg's North End and eventually in 1970 settled in North Point Douglas. Throughout his life, Dad's first priority was his family. He always made time for us, whenever needed he was always there. There was never any task that was too small or large for him to undertake. We could see the pride in Dad's eyes and heart when we were together. Dad was always there to participate in our activities. Very proud to live in North Point Douglas, Dad participated and helped to organize a variety of community activities, beginning with the Neighbourhood Improvement Program (NIP) to Norquay Community Centre to the Neighbourhood Bicycle Patrol Watch. Dad was a driving force and founding member of the Westland Foundation, he helped to raise significant funds for community groups and the Foundation's Education Fund. He was proud of the fact that he was an integral part of creating the Foundation, he marvelled at how a volunteer group of community members could raise an endowment of in excess of $1.7 million. Dad enjoyed and never missed a Westland fund raising event. Dad worked for the C.N.R. for 38 years as a semi-truck driver and a shop attendant. Before and after his retirement, Dad developed a small residential property management business. Dad loved carpentry and to build stuff that had a practical application. When people saw his work, they loved it because it looked good and was built to last. Dad enjoyed spending summers on Lake Winnipeg or the Red River on the family boat named after his daughter - the Jody-Lynn. There were many weeks that Dad and his long-time companion Ann soaked up the sun and enjoyed their own and the other boaters' company. Included in the fun of the boat was Dad's second companion of 15 years, a Bichon Frise named Bear. Dad and Bear would often be seen driving around the town, Dad behind the wheel and Bear sitting in the seat Dad made for him so that he could see as clearly as any passenger could. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Emil Prystanski. Dad is survived by his children John (Jessica) and Jody (Dave), his grandchildren Scott and Christopher, great-grandchildren Jaiden and Roxanne, and long-time companion and friend Anna Myszczuk. Honorary pallbearers are His Honour Philip Lee, Susan Thompson, Dave Charrette, Terry Jonasson, and George Labelle. Pallbearers are Philip Burns, Lou Fernandez, Allen Harasymuk, Christopher Harris, Tony Musto, and David Telenko. A funeral service will be held for William on Saturday, January 30 at 11:00 a.m. (today) at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Westland Foundation, Unit 68111, RPO Osborne Village, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 2V9. Hold on to every memory you have as those memories will carry you through times when you feel you cannot carry on. Sometimes feelings go unspoken but pictures tell 1000 words.
