MARILYN PODJAN July 5, 1940 - January 25, 2016 Suddenly, after a hard fought battle with cancer, Marilyn Ann Podjan (nee McRae), 75, of Niverville, passed away at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, MB, on January 25, 2016. Marilyn is survived by her daughters: Laurel and Shannon (Rob), her grandson Xavier, her brother Doug McRae, her sister Elaine McDonald, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alvin, and her parents, Melvin and Doris McRae. Marilyn was born in Stonewall, MB, and lived her childhood years in Warren on the family farm. After graduation, Marilyn moved to Winnipeg with her dear friend, Ina Laird, where she worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia and enjoyed a variety of hobbies such as curling, going to dances, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. She married her loving husband Al, on June 24, 1967 and they settled in Niverville where they ran Al's Plumbing and Service Ltd. together for 40 years, and raised their family. Once the girls left home, they enjoyed many trips and adventures collecting and selling antiques. Marilyn was an active member of the Niverville community and the Niverville United Church. She took great pride in her home and her family, and could always be counted on to help anyone in need. She believed that to help was to show love, even in the simplest of things, and her love was fierce and unwavering. Thanks to all who inquired often about her, the many home care staff who cared for her, and the staff of CancerCare Manitoba who handled and oversaw her treatment. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Niverville United Church, 55 1st Street N., Niverville, MB. Lunch to follow at the Niverville Heritage Centre, 100 Heritage Trail, Niverville, MB. Interment will take place at the Niverville Heritage Cemetery, Niverville, MB. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Marilyn may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the Niverville United Church. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My sympathy to Shannon and Laurel. I have never met you but I went to school with your mother at Warren from grade 1 to 11. We did not contact each other very often but we always sent Christmas cards. Even this last December I got a card from her so was very surprised when I heard of her passing. May your memories of your mother comfort you during this difficult time. Lillie (Froese)Martens - Posted by: Lillie Martens (friend) on: Feb 01, 2016

  • I have many great memories of Marilyn and Al, and her Mom and Dad, Doris and Mel. Marilyn and I were closest during the time our children were growing up and we supported each other through the pleasures, trials and tribulations of parenting. Although we have had little contact since I moved to BC the memories are precious now. My heart goes out to Laurel and Shannon who were among my favourite piano students. - Posted by: Joy McLeod (formerly Veley) (friend) on: Jan 31, 2016
