JACOB HARRIS January 11, 1927 - January 31, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jacob Harris due to complications from a recent stroke. He was 89. Jacob (Jack) will be sadly missed by his wife Francine; his children, Rod (Tricia), Wayne (Evelyn), Carol (John), Roger (Gwen), David (Leigh-Anne); his eighteen grandchildren and his seven great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his daughter Marilyn. Jack was born in the Harris family home on Douglas Avenue in North Kildonan during a snow storm on January 11, 1927. He was a lifelong resident of Manitoba. In 1950 Jack began a 41 year career with Eaton's where he served in many capacities. He retired as the Floor Coverings Sales Manager for the Western Division. In 1952, Jack married Francine Romyn, the love of his life for the next 63 years. He readily identified their marriage as his greatest accomplishment. They began married life in Winnipeg's Elmwood neighborhood, but in 1968 moved to their farm just outside of Stonewall. They raised their family and farmed there for the next 43 years. Jack was baptized in the Winnipeg Christian Reformed Church. He remained a faithful member of that denomination for 89 years. One of his great loves was singing the hymns of the faith, something he did at church or at any farm chore with joy and gusto. After his retirement from Eaton's, he and Francine were able to travel extensively. While he loved those trips, he always felt that he never saw anything quite as beautiful as their farm. The Memorial Service celebrating the life of Jacob Harris will be held Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 653 Knowles Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Canadian Food Grains Bank would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear Francine - I saw Jack's obituary in the Free Press and would like to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family. You and I worked together at Bowrings' and I know how special your marriage was. I received the following verse in a card years ago and would like to share it with you ......"Those we love can never really leave us .....we feel their presence like a gentle touch, whenever we remember moments shared, and do again the things they loved to do. In so many ways they remain with us, their gentle spirits part of all we do and all we are." With deepest sympathy ..... Lib Downes - Posted by: Lib Downes (friend from Bowrings') on: Feb 07, 2016

  • Uncle of Ed. Greatest person. Always happy and around for the family. Lots of Love for you and your family - Posted by: Ed And Colleen Wiersema (Uncle) on: Feb 05, 2016

  • I will forever hold Uncle Jack closely in my heart for his incredible kindness, gentleness and beautiful soul. Although there's many happy family memories of him from days gone by, it's the more recent ones that resonate with me most. In times of trial and tribulation, Uncle Jack made me feel loved and offered such warm, genuine comfort, particularly after losing Gary. He also gave my family his strength on the day Dad passed, and was there with us to sing him over to the other side - these are life altering moments that I will never forget. There are simply no words to express how much my uncle was loved and how deeply he will be missed. Thank you Uncle Jack for being such a special part of my life! I will treasure your memory always. Heaven now holds another angel. - Posted by: Rita van Leeuwen (niece ) on: Feb 04, 2016
