DONALD (DON) ROBERT BARNETT July 24, 1933 - February 14, 2016 (82 years) He is survived by his loving wife Jackie, his children; Rick (Deb), Joy (Tom), Bev (Len), Roberta (Dana), his grandchildren; Ashlee, Justin, Nigel, Nolan, Nathan, Faith, Ian and Sean, and Mother of his children, Jean. Also left to cherish his memory are Jackie's children and grandchildren, his siblings Ted and Diane and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings; Tom, Alf, Kae, Herb, Lillian, Frank, Helen and Millie. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Dad lived an entertaining and fulfilling life. He spent 32 years as a City of Winnipeg Firefighter. Dad was passionate about all he did in life, especially his family; showing off his typical grin of pride every time he spoke of each, and every one of them. Dad was a man of many chapters. He grew up in North Winnipeg, where he started his family. He later moved into St. James with his young family where he started at the Fire Department. In 1974 we moved to West St. Paul where he fulfilled a dream of owning a farm. In retirement, he moved to Camp Morton (Gimli) where he continued to enjoy rural life, especially building bon fires in the back yard. For the last years of his life, he returned to St. James to be closer to family. The unforgettable memories, mishaps, and jokes will live on forever. No man would have fought harder to spend each day he had with family. His charismatic presence will live on forever and his love will remain unconditional. Dad, your days of struggling are over now, find peace and relaxation in watching over us each day. We will miss you dearly. Love you dad! A special thank you goes to Dr. Taraska for his continuous care and support. The family would also like to thank the Emergency Staff at Grace Hospital for their significant effort to keep dad with us. Celebration of life accompanied by the Firefighter Honor Guard will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Manitoba Lung Association in Dad's memory. "His legacy of love, support, respect and devotion will continue to send ripples in our lives. He gave us many cherished memories and anecdotes."

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • There isn't sufficient space to list the many times Don was there for Helen and me. He was the one bright light, the rock, during our time living in Winnipeg. He was a constant support while I courted his beloved sister . Don and Helen--- the two diamonds in the Barnett family, and I shall miss them both very much until we renew our deep friendship on the other side of the curtain. - Posted by: Patrick Mansfield (Brother-in-law) on: Feb 23, 2016

  • Dear Roberta, Dana and family It is so difficult and heartwrenching to lose someone important in our lives especially a parent. May God give you and your extended family comfort and peace. May you sense HIS special closeness as you must cope and continue life without your dad. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
