I met Dennis when I moved to Winnipeg in 1984 with the CNR. Dennis was my supervisor at the Fort Rouge Computer Center (FRRCC) on Pembina Highway. We mostly worked the midnight shift together and Dennis shared many of his stories and life history with me. I was in my mid twenties and Dennis was in his mid-fifties but that did not stop him from challenging me to a 10km run during one of our lunch breaks on midnight. He was always very kind to me and the other new guys and very welcoming to Winnipeg. I left the railway for greener pastures a few years on but Dennis was always remembered as a friendly and kind soul. Vaya con Dios Dennis. - Posted by: Andrew Koczerzuk (co-worker) on: Aug 30, 2021

It is now just about 3 months shy of 20 years since we met and enjoyed the wonderful couple Karen and Dennis Jason were, especially when out hiking. My now wife and I were about 1/2 way to the south rim of the basin in Big Bend National Park when those 2 "old people" caught up with 2 college students. We made quick trail friends and all made it to the rim together. What Dennis and Karen didn't know was I was about to propose there to the love of my life. I hated not to continue on with them but needed the solitude to get my asking nerve up. Shortly after the vanished back down the trail I asked and she accepted. I no longer recall which one volunteered to take our photo with their camera on the south rim just before I proposed. They had no way of knowing at the time just how important their kindness and photo was to us. They did send the photo as promised while traveling the Texas coast 1.5 years later. We were thrilled and wrote them back to thank them and share the great and long over due news. We would have loved to hit the trail with them again but life never allowed it. Karen, our deepest sympathies but we know the rich memories made with Dennis must bring a smile of joy each passing. My wife and I along with Ella (7), Jess (11), and Audrey (15) will, Lord willing, be hiking that same trail the week before Christmas as the 20 yr anniversary of our engagement approaches. When we reach the south rim, we will stop for a moment of silence in memory of Dennis and then say a prayer that you both meet again in joy! Karen, Todd, Doug, Brianna, Addie, It seemed like Uncle Denny would live forever. I remember him custom tailoring his Christmas trees by drilling holes and inserting branches, joking about my dad, his brother Tom being handy, {not} camping trips to Big Whiteshell and Grand Beach and "bear" stories from Saddle Lake. We will miss him. - Posted by: Debby Jablonski, Bill Armstrong and Bailey Jablonski Armstrong (Niece and goddaughter) on: Mar 06, 2016

Karen - our hearts and our prayers are with you and your family. We will always remember Denny's sensitive spirit the day he delivered the phone call news that my mom had passed away. We will miss seeing him out in his boat - fishing at dusk. (33 North Shore - Hecla) - Posted by: Karen & Lloyd Kornelsen () on: Feb 29, 2016

My late wife Nalini and I were avid lovers of the outdoors. That is what brought Jim Portree, Carol Portree and their families close to us. During our countless outdoor adventures in the Province of Manitoba as well as in the Canadian Rockies, there are many stories still fresh in my memory. Dennis and Karen became known to us through Jim. When my dear Nalini passed away in January 2012, I took a 8450 kilometers-long roadtrip from Vancouver to Winnipeg-Thompson-The Pas-Saskatchewan-Alberta and back to Vancouver. I did this to relive the precious memories I still have of the province of Manitoba.I had stopped at various places to meet people who meant a great deal to me. On June 1st I visited Tamara and Glen Speirs,Lindsey and Gracey in Winnipeg. On June 2, 2012 I visited Anne along with Jim, Jason and Karen. The details of the visit are still fresh in my memory. Jason has lived a wonderful life. I firmly believe that he is in a better and permanent home now. Thank you Jason for the happy memories you have added to our (Nalini and I) lives. Karen, please be assured that I am thinking of you at this time of loss. I am sure time will heal the difficulties you snd your family are going through. - Posted by: Kidoor Bhat (Friend) on: Feb 28, 2016

We so enjoyed Denny and Jim coming by for a visit after their fishing trips. Both had the rough look after camping, but their eyes bright, both grinning and sharing their adventures...and sometimes their catch too. Denny was easy going, generous with his talents and his sense of humor. - Posted by: Brenda Portree and Greg Shettler (friends ) on: Feb 27, 2016

Denny was very special to his friends and family. Not only was he a better golfer than I but also a better fisherman. He will be sadly missed! - Posted by: John Shupeniuk (Friend) on: Feb 27, 2016
