ELSIE MEDWAY After a short illness, Elsie Medway passed away peacefully on January 31, 2016, at St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 91. Mom was born on December 17, 1924, at St. Boniface Hospital. She grew up in the north end of Winnipeg. It was here that her love of family, her Ukrainian culture, the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox faith and the value of lifelong friendships were nurtured and encouraged. After graduating from high school, she took a secretarial course and began her work career at Robinson Furs. Soon after, she met and on October 7, 1944, married Milen Medway. When Eleanor and George were born, she became a full-time mother and homemaker. She excelled at both. No job was too big for her, especially when it came to her children. She volunteered at our school and was active on the PTA board, sewed costumes, (many by hand), took us to church, dance, piano, sports and cadets. She was an excellent cook and baker. As we got older, Mom began working part-time at Eaton's. She eventually became the first woman manager in her group and a buyer for the western stores. She enjoyed her career and was a diligent and well respected employee. Although she had many work responsibilities, she always made time for her husband, her children, grandchildren and later great-grandchildren. When she retired, she had more time for family, friends and volunteer work at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Cathedral. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling all their married life. As we were growing up, it was to see family in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Later it was trips to Hawaii and 21 years to Florida. Mom is survived by her daughter Eleanor, daughter-in-law Claudette, grandson Chris, great-grandsons: Milen and Kinsley; granddaughter Andrea (Chuck) Guertin, great-grandchildren: Kay-Lynn, Kimberley and Alex; granddaughter Laura; granddaughter Karen (Cam) Watt, great-grandchildren: Jessica and Jordan; sisters-in-law, Shirley Christie and Marge Krestanovich. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Milen; son George; parents, Nicholas Krestanovich and Victoria; stepfather George Goriak; brothers, George Krestanovich and Bill Christie. Funeral service will take place on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of Comforts of Homecare; Eveline Sabourin, Ray Aubin and the Palliative Care Program - Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, St. Boniface Breast CancerCare, St. Boniface Palliative Care Ward; and especially her family doctor, Dr. A. Khelil, for all their compassion, caring and understanding. If friends so desire, donations can be made to The Palliative Ward - St. Boniface Hospital, C1026 - 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or a charity of their choice.
