MICHAEL SHERMAN November 17, 1935 - March 11, 2016 Michael Sherman passed away peacefully on March 11, 2016, with his wife of 55 years by his side. Michael is survived by his wife Ellen; sons, David (Angie) and Peter (Joanne); grandchildren, Alexandre, Brittney and Jordan. He was predeceased by his mother Jean Pocorn, father Stephen Sherman and stepfather Howard Pocorn. Born in Winnipeg in 1935, Michael grew up on Scotland Avenue in Fort Rouge. After graduating from Kelvin High School in 1953, Michael began his career at United Grain Growers as a clerk in the Capital Stock Department. United Grain Growers was also where he would meet the love of his life, Ellen. Michael and Ellen wed in 1960 and had their first son David in 1965. Wanting the best for his young family, Michael attended university in the evenings and eventually worked his way up to Corporate Secretary. In 1969, the family welcomed their second son Peter. Not only did Michael work hard at his career, he also had a passion for playing the accordion and performed with his band The Ambassadors at venues around the city. Michael shared his joy of music with his children, who would go on to perform in their own bands. Michael also encouraged his boys to play sports and volunteered his time coaching hockey and soccer. In his later years, it brought Michael great joy to visit with his grandchildren and hear about their lives. Special thanks to the staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, Seven Oaks Hospital and Home Care Services, for their care and compassion. A celebration of Michael's life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg, on Thursday afternoon, March 17 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, we kindly request that donations be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I had the honour of working with Mike at UGG through the 1990's and knew I could count on his sincerity, loyalty, and dedication to doing the right thing...always a practical joke up his sleeve. We had a Board meeting in Kenora in a round building once and one of the Directors told mike to follow him around the place because there was a Ukrainian Trailer nearby...he stopped every so often and asked Mike "did you see the Ukrainian Trailer yet???". Took Mike three rounds to "get it"...but he did with a smile. Mike: not a follower but a genuine leader through his values. Rest well/Brian - Posted by: Brian Hayward (Colleague) on: Mar 17, 2016

  • Dear Ellen, Sorry for your loss, our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family during this time of sorrow. Larry & Connie Sopiwnyk - Posted by: Larry & Connie Sopiwnyk (Friend) on: Mar 15, 2016

  • My condolences to Dave and the entire family on Mike's passing. I had the opportunity to meet and work with Mike during his time at UGG and it was always a pleasure to interact with such a well respected, focused and hard working man. My hope is that the entire extended Sherman family can find comfort and peace in each others memories of Mike for the great person he was. - Posted by: Trevor Buhnai (Co worker, friend) on: Mar 15, 2016
