MARGARET ANNE SAGAR MCCALL One Sweet Woman Margaret, known as the "Smartie Cookie lady," passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14 at the age of 82. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Janice (B.) Failes of Roanoke, Virginia, and Karen of Winnipeg; two grandsons Jedidiah of Virginia (Courtney) and Michael (Winnipeg); three great-grandchildren Kimmy, Jayden and Jude (Virginia), and two sisters Joan Herzog (Edmonton) and Rosemary Best (Toronto) and many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by Neale, her husband of 58 years, and by her mother, father, brother Jim Sagar, son-in-law Rick Brown and niece Rosemary Lynn Hopkins. Margaret was born in Winnipeg on August 31, 1933 to Horace Dixon Sagar and Mary Alice Bird. She was little sister to Joan and Rosemary. She met the love of her life when a friend dared her to ask the Coca Cola delivery guy (Neale) out on a date. They were married on March 15, 1952. Margaret and Neale lived in Edmonton, Dauphin and Winnipeg, as Neale worked for CNR and VIA RAIL. A memorial service for Margaret is planned for Friday, March 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 220 Helmsdale Ave. Her family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Middlechurch Home for their compassionate care and the Mother's Union group at St. Stephens who have been faithful friends throughout the years. Margaret loved being part of the Kildonan Mall Walkers, Meals on Wheels and the Northern Lights Car Club, with Neale. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Margaret made 1000's of Smartie Cookies over the years and loved to give them away. She was a woman of deep faith, an active church volunteer and is especially remembered as the cheerful front door greeter. She had a great smile, knew how to make people comfortable and always put others first. If you have any Smartie Cookie stories, we would love to hear from you. She was a great Mum, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother and we will miss her dearly. She was one sweet woman!

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I would like to send my condolences to you Janice and your family. I am pretty sure I got an opportunity or two growing up to be introduced to those smartie cookies your mom made. I think she created this recipe. She was one smart cookie herself. I used to believe these cookies would make me smart but it turns out I am just a cookie monster. Thanks for sharing. Hugs to you. - Posted by: jill palmer nee mcwhinney (school friend of Janice) on: Mar 17, 2016

  • So sorry to hear this sweet lady has passed, but also happy for her and Neale to be reunited as they were one awesome couple. My husband and I met them both in late 1992 and that Christmas experienced her Smartie Cookies for the first of many, many, many times to come and received small buckets or containers of them from her over the years. Such a simple recipe, but because they were made with love, they tasted incredible. Went to the house one time and she gave me some and actually apologized for the fact that they were frozen and that I would have to wait a bit before I could eat them LOL! I also have a beautiful hat (not one that you wear, but one that you hang on the wall that she made). Enjoyed every meeting and get together that we ever had with Margaret. I hope Karen still has the 58! Condolences to all of the family and friends out there and I know there are plenty! Rest In Peace Margaret, you are sure going to be missed. - Posted by: Debbie Schmidt (Was also in Northern Lights Car Club) on: Mar 16, 2016
