IRMGARD FRIESEN Irmgard Friesen died peacefully on March 16, 2016 at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her brothers John and Rudy Friesen, and her sister Martha Enns. She will be deeply missed by her brother-in-law John, nephews Martin (Ingrid), Erich (Joanie), and nieces Charlotte (Greg), Anne-Marie (Henry); as well as great-nieces, great-nephews, many other family members and friends. Irmgard was born in southern Russia on January 26, 1923 and in 1924 immigrated with her parents Jakob and Maria Friesen, to Canada. In 1939, due to the challenges of unemployment the Friesen family moved to the booming economy offered by Germany. Irmgard worked as a secretary to support her family. In 1945, Irmgard, Martha and their mother were forced to flee across a frozen inlet at the Baltic Sea. They returned to Canada in 1950, after spending several years in refugee camps in Denmark and Northern Germany. In Winnipeg, Irmgard worked as a legal secretary and a caregiver for her parents. She volunteered wherever help was needed and was especially talented in organizing events, baking, sewing, singing and gardening. To her last day, she loved her view of the Bethania garden. Irmgard was always so grateful for the kindness and care she received from the Bethania staff. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue. If people wish to honour Irmgard's memory, donations can be made to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2K 3S7, or charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt. I only just found out when my Aunt included the newspaper clipping of her passing in my Christmas card. Irmgard was a close and dear friend of my mother, Adina Zahn (nee Hooge) who passed away 11 years ago. They were both legal secretaries and at one time worked together for Bill Martens (if I remember correctly). They kept in touch even after they were no longer working together. My Mom had a lot of respect for Irmgard as a co-worker and friend. I frequently heard stories about trips she had taken her nieces on. Irmgard shared many delicious recipes with my mother, which my mother would pass on to her sisters and cousin. In particular, the Lebkuchen cookies (Irmgard's recipe) are made every year by my Aunt Marlene, Anne and Anita at Christmas. Thank you for the recipe Irmgard! Many people have tasted these cookies and they are a favorite among many family members. Dorothy Li (nee Zahn), Vancouver - Posted by: Dorothy Li (nee Zahn) (daughter of a friend) on: Dec 19, 2016
