I was lucky enough to get to work for Vic for a few summers at the Meadows Golf Course when I was 19-21. He called me "Steinbach" because my mom grew up there and he was friends with many of my aunts and uncles growing up in town. I learned so much from Vic about being a hard worker and doing many extra jobs with him when he needed for the grounds crew. I began my last summer there two years ago and asked Vic about working full time with the grounds crew as I was looking for more hours and a "real job" as he called it! He had a full crew already but he really wanted to help me out and I'll always appreciate how he went out of his way to do that for me. By the time he found a place for me on the crew I had got an opportunity to work full time with a roofing company. I met up with Vic to talk about the job and thank him for taking the time to help me find more work. He told me roofing would be hard work and a great learning opportunity, however if it didn't work out he'd always have room for me to come back with him. If you wanted to work hard, Vic was willing to help or teach you anything he could and I could not be more appreciative of the short time I got to spend learning from such a great man. I last ran into Vic during last year's MCA bonspeil as my team was playing at East St. Paul. My team didn't do so well and everytime something went awfully wrong I looked back and there was Vic watching behind the glass... How embarrassing haha. When I came off the ice the first thing he said "Wow you guys got Clobbered" and I told him it had to be the ice! Haha I'll never forget that. It was definitely not the ice. Vic was the hardest working person I've ever worked for and whether it was the ice or Greens he was taking care He was meticulous in his craft! Although he was going through some tough battles while I met and worked for him you would never have known it. He was always laughing, making jokes and had a smile on his face at all times. He truly had a passion and love for life and you could see that most on days when he brought his grandson to work! Just wanted to share my memories of Vic with the family as at the funeral it was said you'd like to hear the stories of your father and who he was while you were not around. And from all the stories I've heard over the past few weeks it sounds like he was simply consistent in being such a good person in the way he treated people and lived his life. And one heck of a curler! - Posted by: Jordan Vertone (Meadows Golf Course employee) on: Apr 07, 2016

I am very sorry to hear of your tremendous loss. Jacob loved his Grandpa so much and was always thrilled when he knew Vic was picking him up from school. Jacob's face would light up as he told me "he would earn money while having so much fun with his Grandpa." May the fond memories you have of Vic help all of you get through this time of sorrow. - Posted by: Ms. O. R.Daly (Jacob's teacher) on: Apr 07, 2016

From all of us at The Fort Garry Curling Club, our condolences to Deb and Family. If you set foot on the Fort Garry Curling Club's ice over the past 20 plus years, you were on ice that Vic was responsible for. ALWAYS a pleasure to work with and a humble, modest, honest and down to earth human being. Vic always did his best to please his 100's of bosses at the Fort. In the end, we were truly so blessed to have him as our ice maker, friend and part of the Fort Garry family. Vic, you left a huge void in our hearts, however, we will hold on to all the moments where you touched our lives and try to smile and keep on going. I know you would want just that. I met Vic when his daughter moved next door. His love for his children and grandson radiated from him. He reminded me so much of my beloved husband who I had lost that year. At the time My sister sent me the quote "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. That quote came alive for me and please keep it in your hearts that even though Vic is no longer with you in the body, that love will never die. - Posted by: Lynda Neufeld (Kasandra's former neighbour) on: Apr 03, 2016

So very sad to hear of Vic's passing this week. I knew Vic through the curling world and would see him often at Larter's and The Meadows golf courses during the summer. He always said "Hi, How are you doing?" to me. Enjoyed curling against him as you knew you had to be on your best game when you played him. He was a very gentle soul and humble gentleman and what I will remember the most about Vic, is he treated everyone the same and that was with friendship and kindness. To Vic's family, my deepest sympathies during this difficult time. Gone too soon. You will be missed by many. Boydee - Posted by: Boyd Miller (Friend) on: Apr 02, 2016

I did not know VIc that well. He is was my son Kevin's Father in Law. But just being in his presence you could sense a kind and gentle giving man. He was like a father to my son and I am so grateful he was in his life. I know I will get to thank him personally when I see him again! Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that i go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and I will take you to myself, that where i am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going. John 14:1-4 God Bless you Vic and I know the Peters family will be strong because of their faith. - Posted by: Jim Fyfe (His son in law father) on: Apr 02, 2016
