MANUEL MARTINS CANDEIAS April 10, 1934 - April 7, 2016 It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Manuel Martins Candeias, at the age of 81 on April 7, 2016. Manuel passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital with his son and daughter by his side. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Paulo, daughter Annabella, daughter-in-law Shelley, and his granddaughters Katarina, Natalia and Alexia. Also mourning his passing are Jerry and Agnes Ciastko, and many family and friends both here and abroad. Manuel is together again with his beloved wife, Maria da Gloria who passed away 17 years ago this month. Manuel was born in Torre, Seia, Guarda District, Portugal and immigrated to Canada in 1963. He returned to Portugal to marry our mother and brought her to Canada to begin their lives together in Winnipeg. Manuel was a hard worker, from a generation where hard work was valued. His first occupation was that of a mason and was instrumental in the construction of several buildings in Winnipeg such as St. Mary's Academy and Chateau 100. He worked for Burns Meats for 28 years, and alongside his wife, established a successful rental property business. Manuel was an avid reader with a sharp, steady mind and memory. He was always up to date with current affairs and his ability to recall names, dates and events was uncanny. He relished sharing stories of his birthplace of Portugal and his travels to France before coming to Canada. He was a man of strong character and pride yet a kind and gentle spirit to those he loved. Manuel was the patriarch of the family. He loved being in the company of his family and took great pride in the achievements of his children. He absolutely adored his granddaughters and referred to them as "my lovely girls". His dedication to his family was unwavering and he always put the needs of his family before his own. We are so very grateful for the many opportunities that his hard work afforded us. A special thank you to the staff at Victoria General Hospital, 5th floor, for their loving care, dedication and respect given to Manuel and his family. We are deeply saddened, but take comfort in knowing that our father Manuel is once again in the loving arms of our mother, Maria da Gloria. You were always there for us Pai and we were with you right to the end. We will miss you more than words can express and your memory will live on in our hearts forever. In accordance with Manuel's wishes, a private service will be held. Entombment alongside his wife will follow at the Holy Angel Mausoleum, No. 1 Highway East at Navin Road. We love you Pai.
