WALTER (WALLY) TURCHYN With utmost sadness in our hearts, the greatest man we will ever know joined his Mother and Father in Heaven, May 6, 2016, peacefully at home with the love of his life of 55 years, wife Elizabeth (Solypa) Turchyn at his side and family close by. He was born on May 3, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the second of three children of John Turchyn and Katherine (Ezinicki) Turchyn. As a young boy he attended schools in Winnipeg and in the U.S., winning awards as early as Grade 3. At the age of 18, he accepted a position as an office boy with the Canadian Pacific Railway in their accounting office and IBM Department. Soon after, Wally transferred to the CPR Department of Investigation as a Constable. He was promoted to Investigator and then Inspector of Training, followed by Inspector Personnel in Winnipeg. He was a founding member and appointed director of training at the CPR Academy since its inception and was well-known to all recruits and members who attended courses. Held in high esteem, he was highly decorated with medals and awards, some of which included: the Prairie Region Medal, the Canadian Association of Chiefs Police Service Medal commemorating long faithful service for an officer of a recognized police force in Canada, and the Police Exemplary Service Medal, on recommendation by the Chief, awarded by the Governor General, on behalf of the Queen, along with the Government of Canada in recognition of 30 years loyal and meritorious service to law enforcement in Canada. His name was published in the Canada Gazette, the CP Police Commemorative Book, and The Railway Beat A Century of Canadian Pacific Police. Additionally, he received the Canadian Pacific Police Chief’s Award, a Badge from Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Winnipeg C and E Section plaque, a Winnipeg Police Service Chief Executive and Senior Officers plaque in appreciation for his friendship and professional assistance, a CN Police bronze statue, a CP Police Regional Inspector plaque and many others. For a short time, he was involved with the Northwest Law Enforcement Police Academy, and he was an Extraordinary Constable with RCMP Investigations. With Elizabeth by his side, he was invited to numerous dignitary functions and events carrying the honour of Regional Inspector CP Police for three Provinces, MB, SK, ON, from 1988 until retirement of 37 years in 1995. Over the years he also found time to keep on giving at the Church with: perogy making, Parish Pastoral Council, Church Property Manager, Holy Eucharist Policy and Review Committee, Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus, on the Board with Kildonan Horizons, Board of Director with the Chancery, and running the Church Book Store with his wife Elizabeth. He enjoyed calling bingo, curling, golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, road trips with family and traveling various places throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe. The greatest accomplishment of all was with his wife Elizabeth building their family legacy together as they settled in their home in West St. Paul, Manitoba 33 years ago. His strength, wisdom, wit, integrity and loving soul endeared him to countless members of his family, colleagues and friends, and it was always his nature to think of everyone else before himself. His heart will go on in the memories of his loving wife Elizabeth, four children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren: son, Edward; daughters Sherrie (Kevin) with son Michael (Stacey); Connie with son Joseph (Angele), family Brehanna, JJ, and Chase; Debbie (Armin) with children Drake and Tiffani; and his brother Gary (Karen) with daughters Brianna (Kevin) and Kelly. Predeceased by his sister Helen. He will also be remembered by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. The immediate family of Walter Turchyn extends the most grateful thank you to all for loving expressions of sympathy, prayers and all acts of kindness. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by The Very Rev. Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church (Watt and Munroe, Winnipeg, MB). His place of peaceful rest will be at the Holy Family Cemetery. If anyone so desires, donations can be made to Holy Eucharist Church for prayers of Divine Liturgies for Walter Turchyn. • I first met Wally when we instructed at the Academy. He had a dedication to the Service second to none. The next trip to the Academy was always pleasantly anticipated and that was due to Wally's hard work and cheerful presence. - Posted by: David Boggiss (CP Police Service) on: May 19, 2016

  • Walter and I shared the humble task of holding the cloth during the dispensing of the Holy Eucharist during The Divine Liturgy. We had a natural rhythm when doing this task. It was a real joy. Vichnaya Pamyat Nelson - Posted by: Nelson (Friend and fellow parishioner) on: May 16, 2016
