ALLAN SIEBERT With great sadness we share the news that Allan Siebert died in Beausejour, Manitoba on June 1, 2016. Born on July 31, 1953, Allan leaves to mourn his family and friends in Winnipeg where he lived, in Vineland, Ontario where he grew up, and across the country. Allan was married to Judith Kehler Siebert of Winnipeg. His much loved daughter, Clarisse Kehler Siebert, her husband, Leif Holmberg, and their daughters Harriet and Maude live in Stockholm, Sweden. Predeceased by his father, Jim Siebert, and his sister Jean, Allan is also deeply missed by his mother Nita Siebert of St. Catharines and his three brothers and their families, Paul Siebert and Moira Toomey, David and Ally; Lorne Siebert and Colette Schmidt, Calvin and Carter; and John Siebert and Carolyn Wiens, Dylan and Cora. Allan was a journalist with the Mennonite Brethren Herald and The Mennonite Reporter, and worked with communications for a non-profit organization before Bipolar II disorder caused him to stop working. He turned his efforts to being an engaged and present dad as Clarisse grew up, and welcomed her many friends from around the world into their home. He continued to write, read, share ideas, and inspire others to think and explore. Allan's granddaughters were his pride and joy. We are grateful for the love and support of the Olive Branch community of friends, and the care of Allan's health providers. Allan died unexpectedly at his cottage on the Broken Head River. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at River East Mennonite Brethren Church in Winnipeg, with burial at a later date in Vineland. Thanks to Friends Funeral Service in Winnipeg for taking care of the arrangements and the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Allan's memory can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee, Mennonite Economic Development Associates or the Canadian Mental Health Association available at the service.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Yesterday I went back to my volumes of back issues to learn exactly when Allan began his years with the Herald. It was 1975 and in the Oct. 3 issue of that year, I introduced him to our readers. He came, I wrote, "with a keen interest in journalism." I knew your family through the story were had carried about Jeanie early in my years at the magazine and from stories friends who had gone to teachers' college had told me about Jim Siebert, your father. When Allan came to the MBH, I had already learned about about his giftedness. He wrote that he "welcomed the opportunity to serve the church through [his] interest in journalism." He said, "As far as I'm concerned, the local church is where the action is. But the scattered congregations need a way to communicate...to strengthen and support each other. I'm looking forward to working on this partnership." And that is what he did as long as he had the strength to do it. I enjoyed my years working with him. Since then and in recent years we spoke once or twice a year. They were difficult years for him, but I was nonetheless struck by the faith in Christ that sustained him at the core and the great joy he derived from Clarisse and her family. - Posted by: Harold Jantz (Allan and I were colleagues at the MB Herald for a number of years ) on: Jun 14, 2016
