SISTER HILDA FROST, OSB In the early hours of Sunday morning, June 26, 2016 Sister Hilda Frost, OSB, passed away unexpectedly at St. Benedict's Monastery, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She had faithfully lived the monastic life for 61 years and will be deeply missed by her community. Sr. Hilda, an only child, was born to William Leslie and Elsie Elizabeth (Warren) Frost, May 22, 1932 in Sanford Courteney, Devon, England. She was a convert to Catholicism at age 16, having come from an ecumenical background, her father being a Methodist and her mother a Congregationalist, who were married in an Anglican church. Sr. Hilda entered St. Scholastica Abbey, a cloistered Benedictine community, in Teignmouth, Devon on June 4, 1953 at the age of 21, having finally received consent from her father. She was given the name Sr. Imelda and made her monastic profession May 1, 1955. On May 28, 1983, she formally transferred her vow of stability to St. Benedict's Monastery in Winnipeg returning to her Baptismal name, Hilda. Throughout her religious life, Sr. Hilda was known, love and respected by the members of her community and a wide circle of friends as she touched people's lives through her deeply spiritual, prayerful, joyous and caring ecumenical presence. She ministered willingly as a secretary to a succession of prioresses and committees in the monastery and in the greater church. With great love and devotion, she served as a resource person at St. Benedict's Retreat and Conference Centre where she conducted many retreats, especially on Benedictine Monasticism, Monastic Women, the mystics, Christian Meditation and assisted with Taize Prayer services. She was the Director of the Oblates of St. Benedict and a member of the Monastery's Liturgy Committee for many years, served as organist and as a Monastic Councillor. Sr. Hilda has a special love for Tim Horton's coffee and could readily be seen going out to "Tim's" even when she was confined to a motorized scooter. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Elsie and numerous relatives and close friends in England. The Vigil Service will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at St. Benedict's Monastery, 225 Masters Ave., presided by Sr. Virginia Evard, Prioress. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 30, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. presided by Fr. David Kowalski at St. Benedict's Monastery Chapel, with interment following in the Monastery cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Sr. Hilda's memory to St. Benedict's Foundation, 225 Masters Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R4A 2A1. The Sisters of St. Benedict wish to express their gratitude to the West St. Paul Municipality emergency personnel and RCMP for their diligent response and caring service. May she rest in peace. 204-586-8044

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Sister Hilda was so special in my life. Back in 2003 her and I met , and we developed a very close friendship Hilda prepared me for baptism and on Easter weekend I was baptized at St John Cantius Roman Catholic Church on Burrows. Over seeing the proceedings was Father Zdzislaw Chmiel. The friendship that sister Hilda and I have was and forever will be close to my heart. I loved to send her different things and what was most important to me was that I loved to send her quilts that I made for her. I sent her a lap blanket, for when she was just sitting in a chair reading or doing what she liked to do. I loved the friendship that we shared, the love that she has for me , and everyone she touched. She had a heart of pure love for her friends and for the Lord. She never gave up on me , she always told me that I'd be someone special. She always had the right things to say whenever you had her attention. Every one knows who sister Hilda was and how she loved life. We all have our special moments with her and mine is , I'd have to say is.......... How she was able to look at me as an equal, her friend. And not prejudge me for my past mistakes. She told me how god forgave me and help me be able to forgive myself. Sister Hilda will be sadly missed, but she'll also be fondly remember. Hilda before I go on and on like I normally do I just wanna say again thank you for believing in me, and helping me to believe in myself. I love you because you took the time for someone like me , we built our friendship through our Lord Jesus Christ, And then you took on my personal life. I have so much respect and love for you and I just wish that I had that last chance to say all the things that I wish I could have. But I know that you are with me , as always.......... I'll miss you sister Hilda........ And thank you for being my friend. You'll are always in my thoughts and prayers . - Posted by: Benjamin Bonham (Everything to me.......) on: Feb 22, 2017

  • Sr. Hilda was my link not only to the Benedictines in Winnipeg but to Roman Catholicism. In 1982, I called a number given in a local Catholic church's brochure to register for a talk given by Rosemary Haughton. While on an extended stay in England a few weeks earlier I had heard Ms. Haughton speak on the radio and wanted to hear her again. To my amazement, the voice that answered the number given in the church brochure was English --- VERY English! It was Hilda's! She was the monastery's switchboard operator. In subsequent years we often had a little joke about this. Hilda immediately invited our family to visit St. Benedict's Monastery. One thing led to another and, 2 years later, our family became Roman Catholics. Thank you for that, Hilda. RIP Sr. Hilda. - Posted by: JAN WEEL () on: Oct 14, 2016
