KATHERINE UNRUH Katherine Unruh passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home at the age of 93 years. She is survived by sister Mary (Walter) Klassen, sister-in-law Esther Unruh, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother Henry, and sister and brother-in-law Anne and Joe Hiebert. Kae Unruh was born in Siberia, Russia on November 6, 1922. The Unruh family left Russia and settled in Mexico in 1925, where they lived for two years. After Grandmother Bergen died, the family was accepted by Canada. They reached Morden in May, 1928, and lived there for 14 years. Kae went to school in Morden and graduated from grade 12 in 1940, after which she was given her first teaching job at a country school near Ashern. In 1942, the family moved to Winnipeg. Kae taught kindergarten for 31 years, believing that her call was to love and nurture the lives of children placed in her care. After her father died, she and her mother moved to an apartment and began Bible studies with some ladies in the building. She loved to read her Bible and felt motivated to spread the good news of the Gospel with everyone she met. Many remember her as a dedicated and inspiring Bible teacher. Kae spent the last year of her life sharing her retirement savings with organizations and people who she believed to be doing God's work. This brought her great joy. She loved her church, Calvary Temple, and was grateful for the many people who visited her at Donwood Manor. She was grateful for the staff at Donwood who provided loving care, especially during the past year. Viewing will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, with interment following in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. later the same day at Friends Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Donwood Manor.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Kae was my father's teacher, and he often spoke of her in a most fond way. Being a teacher in a one room school house with country boys, and girls, as students was not an easy feat. She did that admirably. We know she had a lasting influence on her students. She now will receive an outstanding "Report Card" in heaven by Jesus her Lord! - Posted by: Ruth Christian (Father was her student) on: Jul 04, 2016

  • She was my kindergarten teacher at River Elm School many fond memories years later when I met her again she will be welcomed with open arms in heaven. RIP - Posted by: Kevin DAvis (Student) on: Jul 02, 2016
