MYRON HRANKOWSKI Myron passed away peacefully at Holy Family Home on Thursday, July 7, 2016. He will be dearly missed by his Redemptorist community and his dear friends and family, especially the volunteers and staff of Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky Shrine. He was predeceased by his parents, Myron and Elizabeth Hrankowski, and his brother Paul. He is survived by his first cousin Eugene Senicki in Calgary and second cousin Lisa Lys in Brandon. Winnipeg's first "blue baby", Myron was born on November 4, 1940 with a malformed heart and it was feared that he would be an invalid and not reach adolescence. After seeing heart specialists in Chicago, it seemed that nothing could be done for him. After returning to Winnipeg Myron's heart improved, but he wasn't allowed to walk and had to be carried by his parents to avoid oxygen starvation and turning bluish white. The family heard about a new type of operation being performed at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, where blood vessels close to the heart are severed and rearranged to provide normal blood flow and oxygen to his heart. The first of several open-heart surgeries for Myron happened when he was just five years of age in 1946. He had an 80 percent chance to survive. As medical knowledge advanced into the 1950s and he underwent subsequent surgery, Myron's chances at a normal life seemed to be improving. He was able to attend and graduate from high school. He worked at his father's drug store and enjoyed summers at their cottage at West Hawk Lake. During what was to be his last heart operation, Myron inexplicably and tragically suffered a stroke that impaired his speech and movement for the rest of his life. Again, he had to overcome more difficulties in an already difficult life. Myron's good nature, his great sense of humour and compassion for others, as well as his love of books and cooking recipes are an example for us all. After the death of his younger brother Paul, Myron's needs were cared for by the Redemptorist parish community until his passing. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church and spent many hours volunteering at the Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine. His joy was to welcome pilgrims into the Shrine. His life centered around the Church. He had great faith in God, especially in the Mother of God and would be often seen praying devotedly. He was involved in the Parish Senior's Club and enjoyed socializing with friends. He loved all that was Ukrainian especially church music. Myron loved to travel. His greatest joy was when he traveled with a pilgrimage group to Ukraine in 2008. He belonged to the West Kildonan Horticultural Society and had great knowledge of plants and flowers. Myron was always grateful for the help and support he received. We thank the staff and Sister Servants at Holy Family Home for the care he received and to Dr. Taras Babick for the years he cared for Myron's health. A special thank you to Dr. Andrea Babick for the hours she spent in prayer by his side during his last days of life. The Parastas Service will be held at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Winnipeg, MB, on Wednesday, July 27 at 7:00 p.m., and the Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, July 28, also at St. Joseph's at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine, 250 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2V 0M6.
