He grew up on a farm in Rossburn, attending elementary school in Ruthenia and high school in Angusville. After attending Normal School (1947 to 1948), Nick worked as a school teacher for 39 years before retiring in 1986. He taught in many one room country schools' (Jack Fish Lake, Lakedale, Zbruch, Ruthenia, Horod, Boyan) before teaching the last 21 years in Ethelbert. While still teaching, Nicholas completed his undergraduate studies to acquire his B.A. and B.Ed. Nick also taught Driver Education (13 years) to many of the kids from Ethelbert and surrounding area. Nick married the love of his life' Anne (1951), raising children Sandra Anne and Richard. He was heartbroken following the loss of his daughter Sandra Anne (1994) and wife Anne (2010) who he shared a honeymoon' marriage for nearly 60 years. Nick was also predeceased by his parents Peter and Annie, and brother Bert (Marie). Left to cherish his memory are his son Richard (Cheryl), grandchildren Kyla and Dylan, brother Edward (Margaret), sister Elizabeth (Pat, deceased) and many nephews and nieces. Nick was a man of the community', serving as a Village Councillor (seven years) and volunteering on the Ethelbert Fire Department (32 years). Nick was the charter treasurer for the Ethelbert Lions Club (14 years) - twice earning their "Lion of the Year" Award - and Treasurer for the Ethelbert Recreation Commission, Fire Department and Orthodox Church. After receiving a Manitoba Projectionist License, he worked at the Ethelbert Theatre. Nick had many joys in life. In addition to being the best Gigi' to his grandkids Kyla and Dylan, he had a love for nature and the outdoors. Throughout his life, he spent many days camping, golfing, fishing and hunting and in later years, his greatest joy was feeding birds, appreciating their habits and sounds. Nick blessed others with his trademark kindness, humour and wisdom, making him an outstanding Dad, Gigi and friend. He earned everyone's respect without effort, consistently placing others before himself. His smile brought warmth to those who met him and who had the privilege to share a conversation with him on any topic. He was always an educator', both in school and in life. His presence - and his stories - will be dearly missed. Nick's talent was on many fronts, especially tatting'. His work will always be cherished, especially his bookmark crosses. Your dad Nick and our other neighbour Shirley and I shared the same birth date, March 18, and enjoyed a few years of celebrating lunches together. Nick always made special cards on the computer that were fun and creative. He was a great Country Villa neighbour and I enjoyed long talks with him on many subjects. I will really miss him. Rest in peace my friend. Carole Forbister - Posted by: Carole Margaret Forbister (Neighbour and friend) on: Jul 12, 2016
