WALTER (WOLODYMYR) WOWCZUK It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Walter (Wolodymyr) Wowczuk on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Holy Family Personal Care Home at age 92. Dad leaves to mourn his children, Bohdan (Diane), Boris, Theresa (Neil), and Joanne; grandchildren, Stephen, Brittany, and Tamera. Also left to mourn, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and his nieces and nephews in Canada and Ukraine. Dad was predeceased by his wife Nellie; parents, Dmetro and Rosalia; brothers, Mikola and Mihylo; sister Anna; and daughter-in-law Shirley. Dad was born on April 8, 1924 in Romanove Selo near Ternopil in what was then Poland, and which is now in Western Ukraine. In 1941 at age 17, Dad was taken by occupying German forces to be a forced farm labourer in Bavaria. There he endured much suffering and also witnessed the suffering of others. At the end of the war he was unable to return to Ukraine which was then Soviet Ukraine. He decided to come to Canada where people he had known from his village were already living. On Christmas Eve, 1949, Dad arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. He then went by train to Winnipeg. In Winnipeg he started a new life, first working for CN Rail on the extra gang, straightening railway tracks after the flood of 1950. Then he got permanent work at CP Rail Weston Shops, working as a carman, retiring in 1984 after 33 years of service. Dad was a handy man, able to fix many things. He enjoyed tending to his apple trees and the vegetable garden where he grew amazing tomatoes. He also was involved with bees and honey making with a longtime family friend. Dad was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, and member of the Seniors' Club. He supported many Ukrainian Canadian organizations and he managed to return twice to his village in the Ukraine to visit his family. We would like to thank the Meals on Wheels volunteers, the staff at the Misericordia Interim Care and Holy Family Personal Care Home for their care and compassion. Divine Liturgy to be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave., with a Redemptorist Father officiating. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bishop Vasyl Velychkovsky Martyr Shrine, 250 Jefferson Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2V 0M6 or to a charity of your choice.
