TENA ESAU April 8, 1924 - August 2, 2016 Peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 Tena died at Calvary Place Personal Care Home. Tena Esau was born on the family farm in Plum Coulee, Manitoba. When she was six, the house and connecting barn burned to the ground and the family moved in the winter to a rented farm at Rosenhuff. Her father passed away in February 1936, when Tena was 11. The following spring, Tena's mother moved her family of seven children ranging in age from 2 1/2 to 13 years to Morris. At the age of 17, Tena moved to Winnipeg. She started doing house work there, then worked in a factory as an airbrush painter for many years. Tena loved working with people. She joined St. John's Ambulance and volunteered as a first aider at events and in home nursing. She became a member of the Civil Defence organization and took training so she could assist in disasters, such as floods or fires. In 1958, Tena moved to Ontario. Her last job there before retirement in 1982 was doing custom picture framing. In 1984, Tena returned to Winnipeg to be with her mother who was getting up in years. Tena moved into Autumn House in October, and joined the First Mennonite Church on May 21, 1985. Tena's retirement years were busy and enjoyable. She cared for both her mother and sister, as well as travelling, making crafts, cooking, baking, preserving, helping with the meal program at Autumn House, visiting with her many friends and relatives, and helping those who needed it. When her health declined, she had to give up her apartment. Her final home on earth was at Calvary Place PCH, which she had picked herself. She felt she had the best room, with views of the garden and bird feeder, and was happy with the care she received from the loving staff. She had many visitors and enjoyed telephone calls from those who could not visit in person. Near the end, she was waiting with increasing impatience! - for God to call her, and was confident she would see us again. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 9 from 12:00-1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg with interment at Green Acres Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Tena has requested donations to the M.S. Society of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.
